Large tiles
The media could not be loaded. Product as described. Tiles are all present and correct. Chips and dice that came with set are so laughable cheap that 99¢ store will be hanging their head in shame if they sell it, but just to get your started. Vegas style clay chips and dice will cost more than the set. The only omission is the marker for the starting seat for the change of wind.Tiles are big and feels good to handle. No visible cracks or burrs and uniformity is acceptable. Polish is in playable condition but far from mirror finish, nothing a bit of polishing compound and ten minutes of elbow grease can't fix. But at this price it's not reasonable to expect much.Coloring and engraving acceptable. The art on the right flowers simple. New set so sharp and easy to ”no look finger swipe". See video. Tiles big enough so even the cracks (numbers) can easily be distinguished by tactile feel alone. And that's the main reason I bought a big tile set.

Fun chunky set to play on.
I had played Mahjong on a set similar to this and wanted to find one. This set met all expectations. The tiles are easy to read (although no numbers on the symbol tiles- so unless you know the numbers this would be a frustration). It comes with it’s own carrying case, but it is a heavy set. This is an Asian set, so no jokers that are used in American Mahjong. All in all it is a fun set to play on you just need a bit more space.

Thought it was a bargain, but it's just cheap, dirty, and damaged.
The tiles are beefy. This is a very heavy set of mahjong tiles. This set is easy to handle while playing. There are many faults with this set.The instructions are terrible and very poorly translated into English. If you don't already know how to play, you will struggle with learning from these instructions. The cellophane wrap that contained the tiles for delivery had several torn or cut areas. The glue or, perhaps the cellophane itself, was stuck to the tiles and very difficult to remove. Several tiles have blemishes, and a few are stained on the back, which means they're marked. We also found chipped corners and a raw oxidation finish (they're not buffed properly). The polypropylene case is very weak. The metal d ring of the clasp was not secured into the latch (the d ring was stretched out and one side didn't even set in its socket - probably due to the weight of the set. This is not an appropriate case for such a heavy game set. This is not what I would consider to be portable. Also, nobody wants to put a set of tiles into neat rows when putting them away, but that's the only way these will fit into the case. The dice are pathetically small and the plastic counter is very cheap and doesn't turn easiy

Good Dots design - Good Flowers design - Full sized 39.4 mm tiles
This is a good (Mahjong tile) set. I like this set! I'm keeping the set, and (given they weigh 14+ lb) would recommend them to anyone who understands just how heavy the complete set is, and still wants them.I would buy them again (if they were lost - or given away, on an impulse to share). The next set for me, however, will be something to play American with; still haven't found a set with pretty much everything this (present) set is, plus Arabic numbering (primarily of the Cracks) and English lettering, for the North, South, East and West tiles in the honors). They're 1.55 inch tiles:39.46 mm x 30.44 mm x 23.96 mmThey weigh 46 grams (each tile).Shipped: the box (and all its contents) as it sits on the warehouse shelf, weighs just over 16 lb.- - -The design of the Dots (concentric circles) were the driving factor (along with overall size of the tiles and of the set) for selecting this particular (Guangdong) set from all the other Mahjong sets examined on Amazon. Price was a consideration. Also had to have the blue. The more the (two-tone) color was given consideration, the more it became a requirement. The blue is really nice, and just the right color. Well done. Understated; reminds a bit of Wedgwood Blue (Jasperware) (English bone china). This Mahjong tile set comes packed inside a permanent (polystyrene?) (milky-translucent) storage case (with a hinged lid, carrying handle, and a bail type of closure) with three dice, some chips (like poker chips) along with a wind indicator (N S E W, on a rotating cylinder, in a holder that lets it spin) and an instruction booklet; also includes two spare (blank) tiles, but mainly, is a set of 144 Chinese (only) Mahjong tiles (in melamine) that are more than 39 mm tall (in their longest dimension).By The NumbersThis is a 16 lb set (more than 14 lb for just the tiles).Easy enough to overlook the weight, but it will be a fact of daily experience, once this set has been acquired. ;)46 grams per tile. 46 x 146 = 6.716 kg6.716 kg = 14.8 lb (for just the 146 tiles, alone)The tiles (doing a bit of math, here) are in these proportions (of whole numbers):140 : 108 : 85 (that's their ratios, in Height : Width : Thickness/depth).Divide each of those, by 3.54789, to get the dimensions of the tiles, expressed in millimeters:39.5 x 30.4 x 23.9 mm(nominally: 39 x 30 x 23 mm)And, for inches, by 90.116406:1.55 x 1.19 x 0.94 inches(nominally: 1.5 x 1.2 x 0.9 in)Those ratios are used as a way to compare the shape of different tiles from different sets (in proportions, of H : W : T) (Height, Width, Thickness).Other ratios one could use include3946 : 3044 : 2396(which is for this set, expressed as millimeters * 100).there is also28 : 21.6 : 17which is a ratio of two integers, along with a fractional decimal, and keeps all three values below one hundred. As AdvertisedThis seems to be the set as advertised. No discrepancies; if you wanted the set as described, you're in luck with this SKU. ;)6,716 g for the set of 146 tiles380 g for the plastic, latching carrying case107 g for misc items (scoring coins, instructions &c.)204 g for the cardboard 'M40-1' box (the plastic carrying case for the tiles fits just inside this box)Total weight:7407 g (16.32 lb) as shipped, without the external Amazon branded box surrounding the 'M40-1' box (presumably, the tiles are warehoused, classified as '40 mm' size, given that particular designation on the box itself).Quality ControlThese tiles are reasonably well produced, and a good value, at the offered price point.Slight patina variance in a small number of (related) tiles:There were eight Flowers tiles that could have stood a slight improvement (in patina/finish, as though another pass with the buffer and the jeweler's rouge - buffing compound - wouldn't be unwelcomed) but the variance has no obvious effect on play, and involves exactly eight tiles, all related (the Flowers/Seasons).The clear plastic wrap they ship in (as a brick of 36 tiles, of one suit) was intact, and seems to be factory original.Nothing suspicious of repackaging was encountered, in this one received set (personally inspected).Design and Decoration (color schemes)Sky blue is a good name for the color backing the tiles. It seems a subtle blue. The backs look laser etched, and there's no real defined texture to them. The photos make them seem deeply etched; somehow, that is mostly optical. A fingernail rubbed hard on them (to scrape off a tiny bit of adhered packaging wrap of clear plastic) catches no edges between the grooves on the blue (back) faces of these tiles. Lasers. Very 21st Century.Craks are in Chinese, and are well-defined (black Chinese numerals; red '10,000' character). Four Flowers have Arabic numerals; the other four are numbered only in Chinese. No blue paint on any tile (like a competitor's photos show, on a different set) -- not as often, was black paint selected, for use in decoration, where the difference between using green (which is what they did use, in almost every design choice) and black .. is pretty subtle. They went with green, in those instances. Not black. So, the Five of Dots uses two colors (green, and red) but has no black paint used to decorate the artwork. The White Dragons are bordered in black. All the Craks have Chinese numbers in black. The Eight of Dots is all black. Some of the Flower designs (the red part, the flower itself) are better than what I'd previously noticed about other, similar sets. There's a new one I'd never once noticed, in any other set, I'm particularly fond of. It's a very good flower. Chrysanthemum, maybe (haven't looked it up).Durability of the storage caseThe case seems like it might hold up for quite a while, if precautions are taken, while handling it.The entire set was picked up and carried, exactly once, by the top handle (think tool box; similar idea). Every other time the case was moved, a cut piece of plastic cutting board (for chopping vegetables on the counter top) was slipped under the case, and the case was carried by supporting it with that cutting board, and lifting only by that board, in a combination hand grip that keeps the case from sliding off the cutting board. ;)This was to avoid the possibility (if any) that the handle might fail, or the case sidewalls might fail - this is a heavy set!The plastic seems particularly pliant - expect it to flex more than some plastics, and to be less brittle (at least, prior to UV exposure in direct sunlight, through a poor choice of storage location, over time). Some of those other plastics used in storage boxes have a different quality to them, giving almost a mirror finish. This one is by some other process. Those mirror-finished kinds I've seen seem more brittle, prone to long (3 inch or more) S-shaped cracking. This one doesn't seem to be that kind of plastic box, and it is difficult to imagine what its failure mode would be.Unboxing .. go slowly and do a good jobThe tiles came in four bricks of 36 each (as usual) and those were just placed loosely inside the (polystyrene?) case (and padded with the styrofoam, on top, so they didn't move too much during transit (from the warehouse, to my address).Peeling the plastic off the bricks of 36 tiles was a chore; in each instance, it was the back (sky blue backing) of the tiles, that the transparent packaging wrap adhered to, if it did. None of the fronts stuck at all.Took some fingernail scraping to get really tiny bits of the adhered plastic wrapping off the backs of three tiles; after that learning experience, a *lot* more patience was used, to remove the other three bricks (of 36 tiles) from their wrappers:.. Think of removing adhesive stickers from new sunglasses, and how you want to get all the adhesive off by peeling very, very carefully, watching for remnants left behind on the sunglasses .. that was the same kind of approached used to solve this). They were fine; I didn't rush it, and got a good result.Fingernails are the right tool for that job.Note that there were very large sections (several tiles grouped together) that required no real effort to separate from the packaging - say, less than one in twelve tiles adhered (to the clear wrapping) enough to be concerned about. This was a hard set to find! I wasn't tripping over it, while looking. I would have liked to have found it sooner.I got the Tom Sloper book last night (in July, 2020) to get started with. Been playing (3-D, real-tile based) Mahjong Solitaire long enough; time to at least get some rudamentary Chinese Official rules theory appreciated.

Not perfect, good for that price
The good thing is this one arrived very fast. And the quality is good and worth the price. But I feel it is not clean when we receive it, kind of greasy. If it can be washed, it would be better. Size fits the description and weight is appropriate. To be honest, the larger size majiang is preferred for me. Though this is the largest I can find in the US.
