Great Intro Christian Biography and Springboard to Further Reading
This is a great series that can be enjoyed by young children and adults. I used them as part of the training for a short term missions campaign. Each of the fourteen team members read a different biography in this series and then reported to the rest of the team. It was reminder that the training topics we were learning were relevant and lived out by the faithful and fruitful missionaries introduced by this series of biographies. For many of the team this was their first introduction to reading Christian biography and they loved it!Positives of this series:1) Great introductory overviews of the lives and ministries of the individuals.2) Basic reading level for an increasingly illiterate culture3) Short enough to be read quickly in a culture with an increasingly short attention span4) Available in Kindle and audio book for the technologically inclined5) Well written and holds your attention without being exaggerated and exploitative6) Chapters are short and can easily be read to children at bedtime or by adults on lunch breaksNegatives of this series:1) Due to their brevity and target audience the series does not deal with the more negative aspects of an individual's struggles with sin and the weaknesses in their personality as sinners saved by grace.2) Does not come across as hagiography (so idealizing the person that it borders on idolatry) but these introductions are not the place to get the full picture of these godly but imperfect champions for God. Instead they are great springboards to more extensive biographies that deal with the fuller picture of these heroic but very human Christ followers.

Awesome
What a work for the Kingdom of God he was sent on and completed for the Lord. Many came to know the Lord Jesus because of him and still are receiving Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Wonderful!
This book was amazing. I have loved every single minute of it. It is a wonderful story of a man in love with God. As Alfred said, "of one this we can be sure. C.T. Studd was no chocolate soldier." This man is a wonderful example of what a Christ-follower should be!!

Great Read!
An easy read about the Life if a great missionary. Suitable for kids or adults, and not very long for those with a short attention span.

"Chocolate Soldiers?"
I have heard stories told from the life of CT Studd since I was a child but have never read any of his writings nor a biography. This book is very accessible and fast to read for young and old alike. It gives an overview of his life in less than 200 pages. The style of writing draws you on like an adventure story. It is a story of adventure but with a difference.I am not sure how much of the colour of the book is researched and attributable and how much is artistic licence or imagined. There is a bibliography of four biographies of Studd written by those close to him so I assume much of the detail of conversations and personal reactions is culled from those biographies. It is an exciting book not just for the real sense of adventure it relates as Studd gives up his cricket career and gives away his financial inheritance in exchange for a life of soldiering for Christ stripped of any semblance or ease or rest. When he was writing to Priscilla his prospective wife he is quoted as writing "It will be no easy life, no life of ease which I could offer you, but one of toil and hardship". That was not said out of bravado and that is what he delivered in full. He was driven to spend his life for Christ whether in England, China, India or his final home in the African Congo. He died to self and was so single-minded and dedicated to his task that he seems to have become estranged from those who could not be moulded to same supreme dedication. At times this comes across as a critical spirit, intolerant of those who do meet the very high standard he set for himself. Yet by sacrificing his personal life and to a large extent his family life he reached thousands of people and pointed them to Christ. He was acerbic in his criticism of so called "Chocolate Soldiers" - soft Christians. It is mentioned in this book and you can find his "Chocolate Christians" tract fully accessible on the internet. It makes for uncomfortable reading. This was no ordinary life and a real challenge to Christians of any generation but particularly today. Be prepared to be challenged.
