START HERE. FANTASTIC CG ILLUSTRATIONS.
Concise, really really good illustrations. No wasted words Once you have this under your belt, go to Burch for a very detailed treatment, I did Google some terms where he wasn’t as detailed as I wanted, but you don’t need to do that to grasp the material. I’ve looked at older books by Kelch and Toghill but they lack the illustrations and detail. What I ended up doing was working from this book to Burch, back and forth. You certainly need Burch after this book, if you are going to take a test or actually navigated. Start here.

Excellent book but Kindle Edition has issues
Very clear and concise. The diagrams are excellent and make the math simple. The only complaint I have is with the type setting in the kindle edition. In many places what should be a ‘-‘ sign is replaced with a ‘?’ This was very confusing at first but wasn’t hard to deal with when I figured out what the issue was. The book also makes references to pages which doesn’t work well for kindles.

The book dimensions are small. Tables are difficult to read.
I checked this book out from my library and liked it a lot. For me, cel nav isn't something I can read once and get it, so I bought this book. Same good material but the book size is smaller than my library edition and this made reading the tables very hard.

I am struggling!
Need to read , make notes then get an engineer or Navigator to help you with rough edges, Helps to sale outside for readings. Wish there was a simulator tool for practice learning?

Excellent resource
Excellent book! He gently walks you through celestial navigation until that magic “ahhh! That’s how they do that” moment. Unlike a textbook it was actually a pleasure to read.

Good Tutorial
I read that this was one of the best books on the subject. At the end of the day, I learned what I needed to. The examples were good. However I had to read some parts 3 times to understand them, and the subject of plotting your position was too brief. I finally figured it out. The author approaches the training as a "How To", without telling why. Maybe with my engineering background the style wasn't quite right for me. But I learned what I needed to and don't know of any better treatment of this complex subject matter.

Nice overview, but not enough to master celestial navigation with confidence
Background:I have the RYA Yachtmaster coastal/ offshore theory certificate and was looking to upgrade/learn celestial navigation without going into in-depth theory and calculations of astro navigation. The idea was to learn the practical aspects of it with the basic theoretical requirements.Positives:- concise and well written- nice summary and good resource to have on the boat if you need a refresher- it skips the theory part that is not essential to using celestial navigation- explains sextant maintenanceThings I missed:- the content is not quite detailed and structured enough to teach me use celestial navigation with confidence (e.g. tired on the rocking boat).- a few steps in the examples were left to the reader to figure out and I had to resort to online search (e.g. how to use a plotting sheet)- the work forms for sight reduction were “high level”, I would have preferred a more structured approach in order to be able to use the book as reference on passageConclusion:- I have read the book in detail and done all the examples myself. At times, it was a bit frustrating to figure out the missing steps, but overall doable. I will be happy to keep the book on the boat as a somewhat incomplete resource or how-to in case other navigation systems fail.- As I was going through the book and exercises, I found some online resources (see Regina sailing, RYA on YouTube) that were far superior in explaining the step by step procedures needed to take a sight and find your location from a moving boat, including work forms. In other words, I used the online tutorial to learn how to use celestial navigation and keep this book as a refresher/reminder in case of emergency
