Beautiful photography. Wish there were a bit more information about each creature costume and culture. Nevertheless. Beautiful.

The beautiful photographs of Charles Fréger bring alive the remnants of ancient culture that still survive today all over Europe. We think of Europe today as sophistocated and cosmopolitan, but through the medium of special celebration we are allowed a glimpse into a more primitive past, reminding us that European culture was not so different from other cultures where today the "wildness" is still much closer to the surface. I was disappointed not to see some of the primal British costumes, or "skins" as they are called in this book, like "Jack-in-the Green", the "Horn" dancers, or the Mari Lwyd of Wales, but their Continental counterparts are certainly here. I recommend this book to anyone interested in folklore, anthropology, or even costume design.

What a lovely book! Photos are facinating and the back has great information about the costumes and the local history and meaning. Coffee table, not a research book, but you come away feeling like you learned alot in a beautiful way.

Lot's of cool pictures and a touch of history and context. We bought this for our younger son who likes to draw strange creatures and monsters. It's been a nice bit of inspiration for him and a great coffee table book for the house.

This book is every bit as gorgeous as the images I've seen from the series suggests. It's an expensive book for the size (in my opinion), but the quality and depth makes the purchase well worth the money! Very happy with my purchase.

It would have benefited from more text. That said the images are an important record of folk traditions that could be lost in coming generations. I gave one copy as a gift to someone with roots in eastern Europe. They loved it.

Even more amazing than the National Geographic article that I saw about it (that prompted me to search for the book). Great photos and commentary to describe what each is about -- this is a part of us as humans that has long been neglected/denied/ignored but these photos resonate deeply with that "Wilder" part in all of us that we need to embrace and seek to understand!The book seller delivered very promptly and the book was in perfect, new condition!

There are very few books written in English that deal with the topic of celebrations that stem from very early pagan practices. Although there are very few words in the book, it does include more information on the topic than is available anywhere else. Plus, the pictures are fantastic. Breathtaking. Beautiful. Each one really does tell a story. This is an amazing book.

Incredible book full of amazing photos. Very inspiring for an artist or costumer. Highly recommend.

Honestamente no sabía que esperar de este libro, aunque busqué reseñas, ya en mis manos me di cuenta que realmente había hecho una gran compra, es un excelente libro con muchísimas fotografías en papel de la más alta calidad, información, etc. Es un documento imperdible. Vale su precio.

Una carrellata di foto molto ben fatte che riprendono in primo piano e in piano totale una serie di personaggi e travestimenti dei selvaggi di tutta Europa. Una bella introduzione e descrizioni brevi ma incisive; è incredibile prendere coscienza di quanti e quali siano i rituali del selvaggio nelle varie culture a noi limitrofe.

日本で言う「なまはげ」的なヨーロッパ各地の伝統のお祭りや儀式の衣装なのですが、フォルム、素材が日本と違って格好良いですねー！私もいつかこの格好して祭りに参加したいです。
