I plugged the 2TB Envoy Pro EX into my 2017 iMac i7 and I have a new Mac
In 2017 I used a Mercury Elite Pro dual and attempted to make a system drive using a 2 TB Electra eSATA drive. A second 2TB eSATA drive works great as a data drive but the boot SSD never worked out. It would boot and work pretty well after it finally came up but it took forever to boot. The Envoy Pro EX on the other hand is five times faster and the 40 GB connection to the computer with Thunderbolt 3 makes it perform like an internal drive of the same type. I formatted it with the supplied OWC utility and installed Catalina on it from the App Store. I then migrated the information from my Macintosh HD internal fusion drive and set the system up to boot on the Envoy Pro EX all the time. Operation with programs like Adobe Lightroom and Xcode, etc., literally soar now. It's like I have a new Mac. And, another plus. The drive runs cool as a cucumber unlike the eSATA SSDs which ran very hot and required that I run a USB Fan over the all the time. If there is a downside to this unit it is the fact that there is no Thunderbolt port on the unit itself. Rather it has a permanently connected, very short cable which plugs into your Mac's Thunderbolt port. It just barely reaches the Thunderbolt port when sitting directly underneath on the tabletop.

The OWC Envoy Pro EX is smoking' good
Okay this will vary from situation to situation but here is mine. I just purchased a new 2019 iMac i9, 27' 2TB SSD. I am a bit of a backup freak. I am coming from a 2009 Mac Pro (Max'ed out with 1TB PCI drive and 4 bays of internal drives 9 external divers etc. etc.).So I wanted something to backup my new iMac 27". Did a fair amount of research and decided on the OWC Envoy Pro EX. While waiting for the Envoy drive to arrive (Amazon delivered in 24 hours by the way) I attempted backup on old HD. Here is how it went. The size of backup is 600GB.Backup One: Sada Drive took 5 Hrs 45min and it failed to boot.Second attempt on same drive 2 HRs and works fine but super slow booting and using.Third: OWC Envoy Pro EX arrived and hooked it up expecting maybe an hour to 1 1/2 hr.Actual time to backup 600GB. It took 14 minutes! Smoking'.The attached picture is just to show the scale size next a Bose remote. The Bose has nothing to do with the drive in any way. Just a comparison.I would highly recommend the OWC Envoy Pro EX. I have alway found OWC to have solid products for Macs and this time was no different.Thank you OWC

Great Video Editing project drive for 4K & 5K projects
Great video editing drive. I have two of these now and it makes it easy to work on 4K & 5K projects on my laptop. After spending years buying big media RAIDs to get the speed to edit 4 & 5K, these small drives can get the same speed. Just throw it in my backpack and work anytime I have free time.

Holy mackeral, this drive is FAST!
It's worth the $$ if you need high speed transfer of big files. I bought it to store video files. It's amazingly fast and OWC is a great company.

Wow.
Blazing speed. Awesome drive. I want another. I can't believe the speed of this thing.

Random Ejections. Trouble mounting.
Blazing fast...if/when it works. This drive doesn’t mount most times when plugged and randomly ejects itself during use. The cable can’t be swapped out and OWC has sent me multiple replacements, all with the same issue. I eventually returned mine and they charge me for it. Better to look for a solution with a swappable cable. I own multiple external drives and this is the only model that’s ever given me trouble.

The best, period.
This is the only USB-C SSD drive anyone should buy.
