Interesting translation, but whimsically drawn illustrations
Mark Twain's translation of these classic poems is pretty interesting. The words he uses are rather complex for a children's book. But Fritz Kredel's fanciful art style makes up for that.

Mark Twain!
I have the original English Translation in the 1960 Blackie (publisher) version from England. That version has the original Heinrich Hoffman illustrations.Mark Twain's translations are closer to the original German poems, and are very good. Unfortunately, the Mark Twain version has another illustrator redraw the original illustrations, and the new illustrations are not as good as the originals. That's why I've given it only 4 stars. If it had the original illustrations, it would have gotten 5 stars. This Calla edition of the book is a quality Dover copy of the 1935 original Mark Twain edition, and is nicely hardbound.I also highly recommend the little yellow paperback edition that is only about $2.20 if only because it contains the Mark Twain translation, the original German, and the Heinrich Hoffman illustrations (except in black and white). It's worth the two bucks just to get everything in one package, but it is a very tiny book with pulpy paper.

Horrifying Racism
Oh my goodness. I got this book to tease my kids with because it's out of control ridiculous, but I was reading it first and let me tell you, there's a story about Santa and it is the most overtly racist story I have ever read. I feel ashamed for having bought it. I hope I'm not on a list somewhere because of it. If kids can't read Dr. Seuss for not being diverse enough, I can't understand why Amazon ships this one next day.

Not for everyone, but wonderful for those who understand what it is
This book is a translation of a German story, in which Slovenly Peter has various things happen because of his sloven ways. I don't think it is appropriate for very young children because it could be scary to them. The colorful illustrations are wonderful and opaque, rather than glossy, which is keeping with the original storybook. I love it and prize it as an addition to a library of original fairytale books for myself that I enjoy very much.

Not for children, sort of
Not politically correct for today, but great fun as a history lesson in Mark Twain and children's books.

My Favorite Children's Book
This edition contains all the original drawings I remember from the 60's. The binding is good and the size is as I remeber. I would recommed this to any parent that wants their children to have a well rounded exposure to ideas.

A fun way to teach good lessons
"Slovenly Peter" is a book from my own childhood, and it is still a great gift for young ones up to about age ten. It teaches without being preachy; children learn to be neat and courteous. The illustrations are great.

My wife reads this book to the grand kids and they enjoy every word and by the way she is very good at play making. The kids always ask my wife to read it to them before bed
