Durand Jones & the Indications aren't looking backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. Even with an aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of early '70s soul, the Indications' sophomore LP, American Love Call, is planted firmly in the present, with the urgency of this moment in time. The Indications' 2016 self-titled debut was the product of friends who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, In., recorded for $452.11, including a case of beer. American Love Call, the band's sophomore LP is instead the record the Indications dreamed of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in songwriting. Blending a slew of influences from years spent crate-digging, guitarist Blake Rhein says the Indications approach songs in the same way hip-hop producers do, as likely to pull inspiration from '70s folk-rock or classic R&B as they are Nas' Illmatic. "Did I expect to do this shit once I got out of college? Hell no," Jones relays, laughing. "Totally not. But this is what God is telling me to do - move and groove. So I'm gonna stay in my lane."

Fantastic!
Hope people aren't sleeping on this one. This is a fabulous cd. The singing and instrumentals is superb. Actually got to see the group live recently and they played almost every song from this cd. Classic soul with a fresh contemporary sound. You will not be disappointed after playing it over and over as you try to duplicate the notes (tenor) of Aaron Frazier. Hop in the Benz, pop in the cd, with your favorite girl and "Cruise" the coastline and groove to these tunes. 😊😊

Throwback to old school R&B
I first heard the song that I now identified as Sea Gets Hotter on the TCM movie channel. They would show of vignette of couples as this song was playing in the background. It took me a while to identify it through a search of lyrics but I'm so glad I found it. You guys nailed the throwback to old-school R&B. I love this style of music as well as many old school Funk music CDs I use for workouts. I am seriously looking forward to many more CD's like American Love Call. This has not left my CD player since I've ordered it, and I just ordered another to keep in my vehicle. Thank you guys for making this old gal smile with some of the greatest music I've heard in a long time. Looking forward to more from you.

The Sirens of Love are calling.
Great new band with a retro sound. Sounding like a band you think you know/knew. Filled with some warm and tender love songs to get your summer even HOTTER...but cool.

Highlight of the Year!
The review by Noomz was spot on: the previous album by Durand Jones and his band was very good ... but this one is even better. A stone cold soul classic, echoing those classic soul sounds from the 1970s. Love it, love it, love it!Okay, I gotta be careful with the superlatives, but this album truly does deserve all the acclaim and more. Definitely one of the best albums I've bought this year. The lead vocals by both Durand Jones and band-mate Aaron Frazer, are nothing less than splendid, and the songs --- every darn one of them --- are packed with hooks and sharp melodies. Say no more; get this one and savor it!

Smooth... like silk
This has got to be one of the finest album recordings of the last 5 years for me, not one but two vocalists put this band in a league of their own. The drummer has such a great falsetto range, it really does give one the feeling of some the finer R&B tunes from the sixties and early seventies. The horns and backing rhythm section are spectacular, such a full sound with every song having it's own unique tempo and vibe. All in all a fantastic album from a band that has become in weekly rotation for me.

Lockdown Car Cruise Classics
What a bunch of talented dudes. Hearing this CD is like remembering the feel of that special, tightly packed section of a record box where all your favourite rare soul singles rubbed up against eachother in their cardboard covers. This bunch of twentysomethings clearly understand the beautiful legacy of those 60s and early 70s melodic, impeccably orchestrated paeans to the viccisitudes of love and modern living. There is a rich meld of influences from the soul/funk of Curtis Mayfield and Ernie Isley to the protest songs of Gil Scott-Heron, including nods to latin jazz and the surfer dreaminess of Marketts-inspired California pop. But this is about influences and not imitation. Durand Jones and the Indications are true originals producing their own intelligent, intertextual gems that have the rush of a caffeine fix under a sunny blue sky.
