The Essential Guide!!!!!!
This book has the most common sense approach to parenting I have seen to date. Very much an advocate of trusting your own instincts, he allows parents to be comfortable with their decisions.A great reference guide, quick answers to a lot of those questions that new parents have... even the ones that they don't know they have, and the ones they don't want to admit that they have.I highly recommend this book!**********************UPDATE************************So, my son is 4 now, and my dog-eared copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care still has a place of prominence on my bookshelf. This book helped me get through a couple of awful colds. It helped me figure out childproofing. Struggles with toilet training (best advice ever- stop struggling!), dinner-time (same advice! :-) ) So many little (and big) questions were answered with this book.I could research things in the book, prior to taking my son for his well-baby checkups.I'm a single mom with a really supportive family - that lives a thousand miles away. Dr. Spock helped fill the gaps. It's not a bible, it's not infallible- I don't completely agree, but I don't completely agree with my mother either!I just can't recommend this book enough.**********************2nd Update!******************************My son is now a 7 year old second grader. And we're a part of a blended family.I've just pulled my extremely well used copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child care off my shelf again and find myself looking to it for help.I think I'll need to buy another copy, as mine is dog eared to the point of falling apart- through no fault of the book, just from constant use.If I could convince everyone to buy just one book to help them raise a child- this would be it.What to do about lying, once a child tries it? What to do about bullies, when they're encountered in school? Should I call the doctor about that rash? My child suddenly developed some new, and strange fears - what should I do?These are all questions that I turned to Dr. Spock for. And all things that Dr. Spock helped me with.I LOVE this book!**************3rd Update************************************The previous portions of this review were written based on the 8th edition, however, I have now purchased the 9th edition, so speak to it.My son is now an almost 9 year old, finishing up 3rd grade. I have two stepsons, aged 7 and almost 5, and am pregnant with another bundle of fun. (coming this December!)With Dr. Spock's 9 Edition available on kindle, I knew that I needed it. I've been out of the newborn game for far too long! I needed a refresher, and Dr. Spock was just the right source to go to.The same calming tone that helped me 9 years ago when I was preparing to have my son helps me now. The same reminder that I know what I'm doing calms me down. I'm going to brush up on some baby care basics, and thank Dr. Spock for reminding me that everything will be just fine.

Conservative, Informative, and Practical
I am an attorney, not a pediatrician nor psychiatrist. When my wife and I were expecting our first child three years ago, we recognized our lack of experience and our need of reference material on how to raise a child. Advice from the Grandparents, while well-intentioned, needed to be "double-checked" for accuracy. This book was in our first order of "how to"s.The topics are broken down in numerical paragraphs, and are often very concise. This works well for us, when we get the crazy idea that our child may have some rare disease or condition, or that he isn't developing on schedule (at least, not according family members). We can then get a brief bit of insight, usually enough to reassure us.The advice is conservative, informative, and practical. As with any suggestions, you may wish to compare it to what is being told to you by your pediatrician, the Grandparents, and other sources. We found this to be a good reference, and return to it when needed. It is the second best one we have, after the American Academy of Pediatrics guide from birth to age five (also a "must have").I would recommend this text as a nice supplemental reference.

The best, for three generations of my family's children
I wish this would be re-issued in a format that's a little easier to read and thumb through. The type is too small and the format is too small. But the content is still amazing.... This is the best, most useful baby/early childhood book out there... and has been for years. Be sure to get the updated version with T. Berry Brazelton, who was a brilliant pediatrician/child behaviorist in his own right.

Incredibly thorough and all-encompassing.
As a parent and school-based Speech-Language Pathologist, I highly recommend this book. It has sections about every topic you can think of relating to kids. It is a long and factual book, so it is not a quick read. Some might find it better to use like a reference book, as needed. Others may want to skim parts that they already feel well-versed in. Dr. Spock was ahead of his time, and this book is completely up-to-date and fact based.

A big book with alot of advice
I bought this book for my daughter in law after our grandson was born. I wanted her to have a old school book that contained some common sense advice. It was an older book last copyright 1998, but has been updated fairly well, although now not totally updated to today. This was my second book, the first I returned due to the condition the book was in when I got it. The second book sent, was sent the same way, via USPS in a thin envelope, but in better condition.

THE book
Dr. Spock's book has been in our family for three generations. My mother had one she relied on for raising her 3 kids, I had one to help with my 3 - now my children have one to help with their children. Babies come without instruction books. Nobody told me to expect rashes that defy explanation, how to combat fevers that peak at 2 am, how to cope with a major tantrum in the middle of dinner, or how to successfully battle thumb-sucking in a 9-year-old. Dr. Spock's common-sense approach to child care/parenting not only helped validate my own parental instincts, but helped me see other directions as well. The portions of his book that deal with illnesses and "what to do" saved my own pediatrician many a midnight call. In this day and age of google-ing for info & getting answers from 1000 sources, Dr. Spock is the tried and true source for several generations now. I think this book is a must-have for every new parent.

I Hated to Give It Away
I bought this book to give my hairdresser, who had never heard of Dr. Spock. Dr. Spock's book was a lifesaver to me as I raised 8 children. When this new, updated edition arrived, I leafed through it myself, and really didn't want to give it away. It is twice the size of my original edition, and has wonderful information about current problems: AIDS, homosexuality, STDs, electronic addictions, etc. Even though my children are long grown, I wanted to hang onto it. I didn't, however, and my hairdresser was thrilled to receive it.

All time great
Well worth a read. It acts as a useful reference manual for advice on a host of situations whilst raising kids - babies to adolecents.

Fantastic book
If you're like me, you've heard your parents talk about Spock non stop when it comes to baby advice. But that's now over 30 years old! A lot has changed since then. This book is an updated version of the old book and I really like it.The authors are non-judgemental, non-preachy, and offer advice exactly as it should be - gentle, intelligent, and appropriate for your baby. There are no hard rules in this book (ex "you must do this!") except when safety is of concern. It's also up to date with the most recent research. Finally, this book is very affordable, which I think is very important for new parents. It's definitely worth a read. It probably won't answer all of your questions, but it will help guide you in the right direction.

Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care, 9th Edition
This book has been my mothers bible in the 60's and 70's and it is still a reference to all parents, as I am now. I fully recommend it !
