Hotel Pastis: A Novel of Provence Review: Totally engaging - I should have rationed my reading this book. I really didn’t want it to end. Great characters, a plot that catches you immediately, and a chance to brush up on some French words I had forgotten. Review: lovely quick read for fans of Mayle and Provence - Fun book and a quick read. A bit light on story and characters and a full on Hollywood ending, but a good book for the beach. We’re heading to Provence for the month and this book whet the appetite.

Brilliant comedy and intrigue
Peter Mayle is an amazing writer. This book is good fun. Ignore some of the rather dated sexist descriptions reflective of his times and enjoy the plot twists and marvelous characters.

Excellent!
This is a sweet book I keep reading once a year. Funny, smart and knowkedgeble writing. Well depicted characters. Great plot. Peter Mayle is at his best here.

Well written with enough plot twists to keep you interested. Fun weekend or holiday read. Five last words required by Amazon

unfinished
I really enjoyed the first 95% of this book. It’s a great summer read. But I felt there were so many loose ends at the end. It would have been nice to read how things ended up for certain characters introduced in the story.

Hotel Pastis
Not his typical type of story line.

Monifique
I really liked this, could have done with out some the language, not really my style. But I did enjoy the character development and the ending, happy.

Wonderful book, fabulous author. Peter Mayle lived for 25 years in Provence and takes the reader there!

I had this book already in my printed book collection but of course wanted it also amongst my e-books. A very entertaining story with beautifully delineated characters. The tale of a british man who decides to leave his life in London and to reastablish himself in France by buying a picturesque old house, restoring it lovingly and opening it as a hotel with the help of Lady he meets in Provence. A secondary story runs alongside, some less than bright locals plan to rob a bank but get hopelessly befuddled - it has everything, crime, love, the Mafia, Le Tour de France - what else can one ask for? A perfect read.

Years ago, I really enjoyed Peter Mayle's first books about life in Provence and couldn't wait for more. Although I liked most of his subsequent books (The Vintage Caper, The Marseille Caper, A Good Year, Chasing Cezanne) I didn't find them as refreshing as A Year in Provence and Provence Toujours Provence until I read Hotel Pastis! Hotel Pastis was a joy from first to last page! The story in itself is not extraordinary, a marketing executive who's had it with the cut-throat, multi-million dollar a year business keeping him on edge 24/7, who thinks he's found the solution to his problems in a dilapidated vacant building in Provence. The protagonist is the usual good-natured guy we've learned to expect in Peter Mayle's books but then we meet his valet Ernest aka Airnest, the most delightful character and funny in a very... ernest way. Added to the mix is the gang of petty gangsters plotting and literally ''training'' for the bank heist of the century. Every now and then I read a book I wish I hadn't read yet so the pleasure is still ahead of me and Hotel Pastis is definitely one of them!
