It's more expensive, but worth every penny. Fish sauce brings umami to the dish. The cheaper brands bring a flavor that is far more fishy than umami-savory and, IMHO, can easily ruin dishes. 40-degrees-north sauce is darker, packs in far more desirable flavor than cheaper alternatives, and won't impart an overwhelming fish flavor when used in appropriate moderation (most recipes call only for a few teaspoons or a single tablespoon). It melds so well with the other flavors in a dish, like the sweetness of palm sugar and the tartness of tamarind juice.

I used to buy cheap fish sauce in the supermarket but those have a bunch of ingredients with chemical names that I don't understand. This Red Boat one has only 2 simple ingredients: anchovy fish and salt. Its taste is authentic and perfect for cooking Vietnamese food. This is what fish sauce is supposed to be like.

I LOVE this fish sauce! If you want to add umami to your everyday meal, this fish sauce is it! Any dish that requires anchovies, like pasta, soups, caesar salad dressing, etc., I add a little splash of this fish sauce and it is umami heaven. The sauce is so versatile with incredible deep rich fish sauce flavor. Yum! It is made with anchovies, small fish, for those with certain restrictions. I switched to this fish sauce from another brand because of the anchovies at first, but the flavor is the part that really shines!

This is the BEST fish sauce out there. Such a clean flavor and nothing nefarious in the contents. Won’t use any other.

Have been a Red Boat fan for quite a few years. It’s the amount of protein that sets this fish sauce apart. Big umami hits. My only complaint is that the bottle was plastic, which I am trying to rid my life of; especially when it comes to food containers. The smaller bottles of Red Boat are glass. Go figure.

Love this stuff. Don't spill it in your car. Tastes great in so many things. Kinda stinky dead fish smell, but what's so bad about that when it tastes this good? Oh, and the smell goes away when you use it, unless you put it in your hair. Don't put it in your hair, its a waste unless someone is going to lick your hair, and if you are in that sort of life situation you need no advice from me you lucky dog. Or cat.

I'm a new convert to fish sauce, and quickly found a huge gap between good ($) fish sauce and bad fish sauce. This is the good one, and only one we buy now.
