Louis Braille: The Boy Who Invented Books for the Blind Paperback – June 1, 1991

I have owned two copies of this book through the years. The old one is tattered and worn from reading it so much to my 2nd graders when I taught elementary school. Then it got lost when it was time to read it to the grandchildren, so I ordered this. Good...now I have one for each of the two kids. Beautiful telling of the life of Louis Braille. And on the back cover it has a sample of Braille writing so I can have the children touch it and see how it feels. Wonderful, wonderful little book...ages probably anywhere from 5 and up. I am a grandma and I have enjoyed reading it to the kids over and over. They are fascinated by his life and the book is so well written with some illustrations.

Having read several of Margaret Davidson's books, I admit I have a certain brand loyalty, an admiration for her writing. I heartily recommend anything by Ms. Davidson, and this little book is no exception. As with her biography on Thomas A. Edison, the subject of this book had to overcome great obstacles. As Ms. Davidson points out, the blind (and the deaf, for that matter) were often not considered able to be taught. Young Louis was fortunate to have a very understanding father, who was able to find an opportunity for his son at a larger school in Paris. There, he flourished, his young mind not only able to absorb learning, but also apply it. At twelve, he would start to create the alphabet that still bears his name. This is the story of this world-famous alphabet and the boy who invented it.Margaret Davidson treats her subject - and audience - with great respect and tells his story in the sympathetic way for which she is known. Children can learn a lot from reading the biographies of people who led noteworthy, if not extraordinary lives. This sentiment holds especially true for this wonderful little book, where the subject is both someone who was able to use his gifts to overcome harsh obstacles and an example of how adults can learn from the children they teach.

We homeschool our 6 and 4 year old daughters and we’re going over the 5 senses. I thought it’d be a good time to talk about how life would be if we didn’t have some of them and it led me to discover this 80 page book for a read aloud. My kids do not have spectacular attention spans and we read this book in TWO sessions! It was phenomenal! This book had just enough facts and so much detail in its small quantity of pages. I actually cried during the last chapter (haha—husband was laughing at me). The kids had a lot of questions and really retained Louis Braille’s story. I’m one happy mama with the experience this book gave us. There was one part I had to change/bluff but it was only one sentence (Louis used an expression saying he’d might like to kill himself if it’s rejected’ or something of the like but that’s an anomaly and there were no other sensitive materials within the book. We were cheering on Louis through the whole thing. Short sweet inspirational and captivating ♥️

This book arrived in excellent condition and was a great read for my 9 yr old.

This book draws the reader into the extraordinary life of Louis Braille, starting from his childhood. It enables you to experience what Louis went through and also how he felt. Now whenever I see or think about the Braille symbols in an elevator, admiration arises anew from my heart for Louis, who dedicated most of his life to the education of the visually impaired.

I bought this book to read to my two children, ages 4 and 5, to help them get inspired to learn Braille. It worked! This book is fantastic. Well written, engaging story, fast paced, but still makes you cry at the end. At approx. 80 pages, it took us about an hour to read, in one sitting. I am glad to know more about this amazing man.

The story is wonderful. The paper was wrinkly and wavy from the glue binding, so it seemed cheap. Fortunately the story is so captivating and heart warming you don't notice the binding.
