this book is changing my life....for the better...I hope
I wasn't going to read this book from cover to cover as I was interested mostly in the bit about diet and diabetes - but found myself dipping back into the book over and again because I found myself absorbed in it all! I'm not a scientist but I found the science bits of this book really interesting and informative and they didn't go over my head. The advice given by the authors seems sound, no-nonsense and easy to understand and follow. They have offered lots of advice on what to do if you are already on a slippery slope (smoking, drinking and sloth!). They tell you what the real risks are of your behaviour and give you options -from the least little thing you can do- to bring about positive changes to your health. I liked the cartoons and pictures - they often got me interested to read the text further.I may not live to 110, but this book has given me a greater understanding of how to become healthier. Since reading the book: I have tried eating porridge; I have walked to the supermarket to buy some wholegrain rice (which I haven't cooked yet); and I have frightened the neighbours by going out into the garden in shorts and t shirt every day(despite the cold) to soak up some rays and increase my vit D levels! An informative and easy to read book for anyone interested in staying fit and healthy - whatever age you are now.

How to enjoy a longer life
This book is full of useful advice, presented in a very readable style. The authors do not try to avoid the science behind their recommendations when it is needed, but their explanations are lucid and often fun. What's really important is that the various factors which affect your expected lifespan are rated in terms of (a) their overall impact on longevity and (b) the strength of the scientific evidence to support any action. This latter point is often overlooked by reporters, but good science requires an evaluation of the quality of the research behind any claim. Many popular myths are investigated - some prove to be well-founded, whilst others are shown to be unproven. Following all the recommendations in this book will not, of course, guarantee that you will live to be 110, but it should certainly increase your life expectancy.Highly recommended.

it is fun to look after you health... and I am not a health freak and i do not like sports, but this book is great!
When you do not really want to read all sorts of books on 'good advice and things you should do to keep healthy' this is the book for you, expecially when you are (secretively) a little bit worried about your health. It is also a great gift for a loved one whose health you are a little worried about! It is written in a way that you have to smile at least once in every page and at times laugh out loud, it has got a lot of funny drawings, that support the text and help you understand the mechanisms of your body in a real fun way. I guess you do not have to read the whole book if you do not want to, one can decide to just read parts of personal interest. I decided to read it all which almost led to a lack of sleep. At times I had to force myself to put the book down and get sufficient sleep the way the book advices, in other words, highly recommended!

Interesting Book
I've only flipped through a few pages and find it quite interesting with statistics, explanations and tips for a healthy life. A good read.

not read it yet
very basic. It does not grab your attention. Most of it are logic statements that a child 12 years old already knows

Everyone should read this book
To its credit this affordable new paperback, by medic father Professor Brian Kirby OBE and scientist son Tim Kirby, tackles the obvious question on page 1: `why would anyone want to?'. Their answer is that we all need to know that medical science has identified much we can do to prolong our years of healthy middle life and stave off the diseases which can make old age a misery - and that those who are lucky enough to avoid the `bad luck' conditions which can't be prevented really could live active lives to 110.The authors come across as having a real sense of mission to communicate, and the book is clearly written and amusing to read. Witty cartoon drawings convey the chemistry, such as how we process our food, but you shouldn't be put off by the science - boxes with key information are designed for the skim reader, and you can approach the chapters in any order. The advice sections are positive, with more suggestions for `do's rather than `don't's, and, crucially, up to date with the latest medical findings: some readers may be surprised to learn of the importance of natural light, or that saturated fat is no longer quite the villain it was once thought. The book is complemented by a blog that will add new research results as they come through. Professor Kirby is no stranger to this - he was among the first doctors to realise, in the 1960s, that heart disease was largely preventable. An important book then, standing out from the run of popular science and self-help manuals through its sensible, ungimmicky advice on giving yourself the best health chances possible, and the total credibility of its authors.

Excellent informative read
As an enthusiastic amateur sportsman I found this book to be an excellent, informative and engaging read. It manages to balance enough detail, based on science, to be convincing with an action based programme of activity based on the science. The authors address a very wide range of health matters (not sure they missed any), but present it in a pragmatic manner - recognising that not everything can be, or needs to be, tackled by the reader. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand how the body functions and how to make the most of what you have.

You don't need to be a scientist to understand it!
When a friend recommended this book to me and described its content I thought it sounded like a book for "boffins". I still bought a copy and can honestly say I was hooked immediately. It is easy and enjoyable to read and even the science bits made sense to me (something my school proffs never achieved!). The layout of the book is perfect for those who like to dip in and out as it's not done in the traditional way and even has lots of great images which give it that certain something extra!
