Accessible and interesting
What I liked most of this textbook is the number of maps, extremely facilitating the reading of Arrian's account. It absolutely adds to the accessibility of the story and allows the reader to follow -almost literally- Alexander's every step. It makes the whole story thereby much more interesting, also for readers who are less familiar with Arrian as a source.

one of the greatest ancient historians
An outstanding work by one of the greatest of classical historians, the Anabasis Alexandri explains how and why Alexander still fascinates us today. The excellent translation is backed up by superb essays on various aspects of Alexander's life and times. A superb work which all students of history should read.

Most enjoyable edition of a great classic
This latest instalment in the Landmark series makes this ancient book very easily accessible to the lay reader. It recounts the conquests of Alexander II of Macedon from the point where he takes control of the Army from his father till his death. Arrian is a good storyteller who was also a senior commander in the Roman military, giving him a valuable perspective on Alexander's manoeuvres. In addition to a very readable translation this edition includes: +Frequent maps explaining where the action is +A number of battle maps to help understand the text +lots of useful footnotes giving some perspectives on biases that the author might have had in recounting a specific episode, or reference to newer findings/if this matches with archaeological evidence. The footnotes definitely are in the right proportion +Summary of each section in the side column-really useful if you get lost or want to pick up the book after a break and don't recall where you were +Framing of the story with forewords/appendix explaining Alexander's rise and the break-up of his empire. +Large variety of appendices if you want to know more about specific topics like weights and measures, the Army and tactics, theories on Alexander's death and much more In summary-this is the best English language edition of this book bar none. It doesn't overpower and is a very enjoyable read.

The Landmark of Arrian ist ein großartig gemachtes kleines Buch.

This a good book giving you a glimpse of the military tactics of Alexander the great, along with maps of the locations and helpful annotations of the background for a particular context. If you are a military science enthusiast then it is definitely a buy.Regarding the quality of the book I am a bit annoyed, it is semi-used with the edges of outer cover worn out, pages already turned over a hundred times and the surprising thing is inside there is an amazon receipt of the previous purchaser, very sloppy packaging.

The Roman historian Arrian's History of Alexander is one of the classics of ancient history. Arrian's account is the source of most of what we now know about the campaigns of Alexander the Great. This is the best presentation of Arrian that I have come across. It's a very good translation with a number of good maps and other references in a solid hardcover binding. Arrian's campaigns of Alexander is one of the essential works of history. This is an excellent edition of Arrian. Highly recommended.
