Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Art

This is a brief introduction to Emily Carr's life and work. Emphasis on BRIEF. But, it is inexpensive and gives the basics, plus a few pictures of her work.

This is the second book about Emily Carr that I have read. I also read her book, Klee Wyck. This book is a very good telling of her life and troubles. And it does it very directly. It is a short book but covers the subject well. There are many very good illustrations of her work included.

Emily Carr was a fascinating woman. This book relates her art to her life and reveals the meaningful stages of her creativity.

A lovely book showing the paintings of this remarkable artist. Color is well done and pictures are very good, could be framed and the story of their production is most interesting.

I wanted a more in depth book with better reproductions.

Emily Carr as artist is outstanding, and her life is just as remarkable. The author describes her childhood in Victoria, British Columbia, and how she gradually found her artistic niche, primarily of nature and of the Native peoples of her area. As I expected from a previous short book by Anne Newlands ('The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson'), this is an excellent good clear introduction with seemingly very good reproductions of the paintings, apposite quotations and valuable insights. In so far as an Introduction can take one to the heart of someone (and perhaps sometimes it can better than a thick academic tome does), this takes one far in appreciating Emily Carr.

A useful biography, well illustrated. More than that, it highlights how often female artists are sidelined although producing equally vital pieces of work. She deserves to be better known.
