Another great attribute of the GMR1038-2 radios is hands-free operation -- a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that can be used for automatic voice transmission. Transmission begins when you speak into the optional remote headset for snappy, hands-free communication that is both safe and efficient. The large number of channels and privacy codes give you several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with your friends and family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. Plus, the channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses to active channels while you watch the display. And the channel monitor function listens for weak signals on a given channel with the press of a key. Additional features include a backlit LCD display that's easy to read under any lighting conditions, a keypad lock that prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and a choice of five different call tones that offer distinctive ring options to easily identify who's calling. The radios are also equipped with a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch, a key beep audio confirmation of each button you press, and a "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking. The built-in headset jack is for the optional headset mic, which provides hands-free operation. These radios are equipped with dual-location charging units that make it easy to keep your radios charged and ready to go. The radios can also be powered by four AAA alkaline batteries or an AC adapter (not included).

Uniden radios without batteries
These radios are very good. Ten miles will be rare but possible, more likely 2-4. I used them on a ship & they worked all over, especially through the decks-very happy with their performance. However, don't get these without the battery pack, I did & used 4 AAA rechargeable batteries. These didn't last long (4-6 hours) before having to be recharged. The battery pack that comes in the 2CK pack lasted 3 days (12-14 hours per day) on a charge, I was amazed at the difference. I went to order the battery pack but found it was almost as expensive as these radios are with batteries so I ended up ordering another radio/battery combo pack.

Invest in rechargeable batteries
They work OK- you won't get anywhere near 10 miles in range though. They drain batteries quick, so have a couple sets of charged up rechargeable batteries handy.

not pleased
The battery packs in these walkie talkies last for about an hour only- I am very disappointed in the quality. We need them for emergencies throughout the day- this is a farmed animal sanctuary- non-profit and we cannot afford to purchase new batteries after paying for these already. I am willing to change my review if we get new batteries. They came on time- they are good quality- other than the batteries

Battery puzzle
These radios have good sound, some nice features, the usual fraction-of-listed range; but the batteries are the real puzzle. I'm using brand new hybrid rechargeable AAA's; on a full charge, after two or three hours of intermittent use, both radios were drained--or so they said. But when I took the batteries out, and put them into two other Uniden radios (different model)--they ran and worked for at least another two days! This behavior is reproducible. Sometimes, if the "drained" batteries are removed and put back in, the radio goes back to working as if nothing had happened. Really mysterious; I'm going to have to discard them, because they're not reliable; a shame, really.

Not bad for the price
The two way radios were just the thing to keep in touch with my son on the slopes. The voice is clear and the reception is fine as long as you are both on the same side of the mountain. On a busy ski day there were many others on the same channel and we had to keep changing our channel until we found an exclusive line. The claim of up to 10 miles reception did not hold true for us. Within a mile we were fine then no signal at all. It could be the terrain or the forest. I think if you were in an open field you would have great reception for long distances. We do not ski without them.

I paid $2 for these at a Flea Market!
I got these at a flea Market for $2! One had the battery cover missing which I purchased on the uniden web site for $1.99! These are great for the kids when we are camping. I can't complain. I agree thought at 10 miles is a far fetched. 600-900 feet maybe.
