This gun safe has Extra Heavy Duty 10 Ga All Steel Construction. I am not sure I could even break it open with a sledge hammer. It weighs 22 pounds. It has an anti Pry Clamshell design that covers the front and two sides completely. This clamshell design should be more secure than the Fort Knox door which only goes down about an inch. I read one review where it had to be taken to a locksmith and drilled open when the combination was lost. I can believe it.There are four pre-drilled 1/4 inch holes on the bottom for mounting. I bolted mine to the floor using 3 inch long bolts to go clear through the floor into the crawlspace, one inch washers inside the case, and steel bars and washers under the floor. So it is not going to walk away or be easily pried up as it might be if I just screwed it to the floor using a lag bolt. My main goal with this box is to keep our home safe for kids. And the Oregon Legislature is considering a draconian law that says that if your guns are stolen, you are responsibility for the actions of the thieves when using your gun.The Gas Assisted Opening Strut is helpful, as the door is heavy, and would slam back down without it.It has a Quick Access Keyless lock. I like everything about this box, but this may be the best reason to choose this one.The lock is mechanical and not electronic, keyless, not keyed. The biometrics to unlock my cell phone don't work quickly or reliably, so it seems that a biometric lock would be more a hassle than a benefit. With a little practice, I can quickly open this lock in the dark just by feel.You can also change the combination. Just make sure you follow the instructions to keep the lid open and test the lock several times to make sure the new combination is working before you shut it. Then write it somewhere safe--in our case I gave the combination to our son. I think of the combination not as numbers, but as positions which helps me to open it quickly by feel even in the dark.I don't have to search around for a key. I can't imagine trying to rustle up my keys if I need to unlock this safe quickly. I can't imagine trying to search for keys when I need to get in quickly.You can also change the combination, but have to have it open to do this. Just make sure you follow the instructions to keep the lid open and test the lock several times to make sure the new combination is working before you shut it. If you are like me, write the combination down before you reset it and then keep it somewhere safe--in our case I gave the combination to our son.Another issue with electronic locks. If there is an EMP (electro magnetic pulse), either natural or enemy caused, there are no electronics to fail and I can still get at my stuff. And if I don't show my grand kids how the lock works, they won't know about pushing two buttons at once. The lock is protected from access its sides as it is recessed into an added thick metal plate. This is another plus over the Fort Knox.Inside, it has foam glued to the lid, and the three sheets on the bottom give another one inch of foam. You can remove as many as you want. There are also some small pads to help remove moisture and prevent rust that last about a year.I think this box is as secure as it can reasonably be if it is well bolted to the floor--more secure than a cheap larger safe, and almost as secure as the most secure home safes.

This thing is built like a tank & heavy too. I'm glade it has a hydraulic lid assist, otherwise, it could take a serious pinch on your fingers when reaching into the box . Spacious. I could fit 2 hand guns in it, or 1 large frame, 2 mags and a set of hand cuffs without issue. It would take special equipment and skills to crack open, yet the combinations that you can set with a Simplex mechanical lock, like the one V-line offers & how it generally works is very intutitive. I had my wife figure out a button combination that she would remember & I adapted to it without any trouble. The button push feels good & is very fast with little practice, & works well without looking at it. You can set a 2, 3, or 4 sequence combination with the liberty to set a "one button push", or up to a "3 button push" simultaneously to set one number. The combinations seem endless when you take this into account. However, due to the higher level of security, there is no key access. Kind of a double edge sword in that regard. Be sure to set & test the comibnation several times with the lid open before you lock it for the first time. As a final note. I know that I could abandon this safe for several yrs. & as long as I remember the combination, it will open. No batteries or electronics. However, I put a magnetic motion detecting light bar in mine running on a battery for light inside the safe. Comes with a few layers of pluckable foam inserts for a custom fit.

I did my homework and everything I read about this safe is accurate - heavy like a tank, well-engineered, and worth the price.THE LOCK: I wanted a safe for home that I could access easily. I read up on all the electronic options and decided against that option. This push-button lock on the V-Line Brute is both simple and tactile. The buttons are raised from the top of the safe, making it possible to run your combination in the dark. The directions on how to change the combination are good, but I also watched the online video a few times before I jumped in to making the change. My advice is to take your time and pay attention to the counter-clockwise turning of the latch knob. Overall, easy enough to do and the documentation provided was good. The buttons and knob do make a quiet clicking sound, but that's to be expected with a mechanical device.THE SAFE: This thing is a beast! Imagine how a board-game is boxed...the box top fits over the box bottom, creating a double-walled box. Now imagine that double-walled concept made of thick gauge steel. The top is so heavy that V-Line added a lift-bar inside which operates smoothly and hold the top up while you are in the safe. The corners of the safe are not sharp but slightly rounded. While this guy is heavy, it's not so big that an adult couldn't walk away with it. If you want it to stay in one place, you can use the holes in the bottom of the safe to bolt it to the floor.THE INSIDE: Check out the measurements to see if this will accommodate whatever you need to store. The top of the inside has the "egg-crate" style foam attached. V-Line includes a couple of layers of pick-apart foam and a layer of regular foam in the bottom. If three layers is too much for you in the bottom, you can pull one out easily.THE PACKAGING: The safe came in a very sturdy box that was snug around the product. The box has a handle inside so you can lift the safe out easily.THE VERDICT: If you want a non-electronic, heavy safe, I recommend this V-Line Brute. Take a look at the dimensions and make sure the fit is good for you. Take your time with the lock when you reset the code...watch the video and test it with the lid open a few times. Excellent product. I'm glad we chose the V-Line Brute.

This safe is very well built, with heavy gauge steel unlike many other small bedside sized safes. The mechanism to lock the safe is also well built with no battery required, mechanical switches that are foolproof to use and set for your unique code. By far the highest quality portable safe I've ever seen with out the cheap flimsy non-secure hinges and electronic buttons of many competitors. This is the safe you want!

I got the older vision that does not have a lock security cover as shown in the photo. This makes it easy to break in to. That was disappointing.
