Rode Microphones VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone

Beautiful, Precise, Crystal, Powerful Vocals. But with a little bit too much hiss.
OMG. The clarity and bold power of this microphone is shocking. I plugged it into my D3300 Nikon (the newer Nikon no longer has the audio input, so check your camera model to see if it has a microphone port on the side). I used the stock cable that comes with the microphone, no adapters needed. I plugged it in and it worked straight away without changing any camera settings or microphone settings. It is extremely sensitive and loud. But I tried the microphone on my camcorder and it didn't fit the shoe and didn't work at all, no matter what settings I tried. I think the DSLR has a powered audio jack that sends out a small amount of voltage to help boost the audio signal, similar to a computer sound card. My video camera doesn't seem to have that feature. The audio is insanely amazing, and accurate. I was shocked, because the sound is almost as good, and better in some respects, to my $150 pro audio microphone with an XLR jack. The problem with the Rode microphone is that it has an audible noise floor. Even with the gain turned down by 30% it still has a hiss. You can hear the hiss when you playback the video, but it's barely audible at all at normal listening levels. The bottom line is that you won't be able to use the audio on a D3300 Nikon for production level sound, unless you have very good knowledge of removing noise. Audacity will remove the noise, but it also damages the sound, and it sounds canny when you remove the noise.I think this microphone might work better with other cameras. I will still use it. But the noise floor and very feint hissing sound is a bit frustrating, because the voice quality is so insanely good on this mic. If it didn't have the hissing harmonic distortion (not sure if it's the mic or my camera. It's probably my camera) then it would be absolutely the best microphone I've ever heard (for my voice).I have a Canon camcorder with a front facing built in stereo microphone. That front facing microphone is the best microphone I've ever heard, but it faces forwards, and it's difficult to narrate a video because you have to be very close to the camera and it doesn't sound nearly as good from behind the camera. But if you have a tripod, I can vouch for Canon's Vixia consumer line video cameras having pro audio grade recording quality.

Seriously RODE?
I bought this mic to use with other shoe mounted devices, so it has to mount on a rail. Turns out, the plate for Rodes mount isn't square to mount in the side position (like all my other devices). And the base doesn't swivel at all! So this can only be mounted facing in one direction. Now I'm not sure what to do with it.This also won't work out of the box with your cell phone, I thought they would have included the correct cable and they didn't. If you want it to work with your phone you'll have to spend another $10.

Check your audio settings with Go Pro
Just make sure if you get the adapter for your GoPro. Make sure that the audio settings are right. I thought that the mic broke due to whatever reason. And it was just my audio settings on the GoPro.

Nice sound quality
The media could not be loaded. I took video and pictures of my Granddaughter’s concert from the back of the auditorium with my Canon SL3 and Canon 28-135 IS USM lens. The acoustics were great and the sound quality recorded with the Rode microphone was excellent!

Good bang for the buck!
These are amazing little microphones! I bought this RØDE video mico mostly because of the wind dampening furry foam cover. But it also has the added benefit of removing any camera handling noise from videos. The lyre mount looks and feels pretty breakable to me. But there is no way to make it beefier without it being able to do its job. The shoe mount is handy if you have a recieving receptacle.I am very pleased with the sound quality. I am by no means an audiophile but I can detect no noise or other distortions thus far. The only problem I had was getting it to work with my smartphone. You have to have the special cable. And RØDE wants $11 to $15 for their cable. There are cheaper options available. All in all I think this is a pretty reasonably priced entry level microphone. As I am an entry level hobbyist I would like to think I know what I am talking about.

Was sold a previously registered item!
When I tried to register my VideoMicro, Rode informed me that the serial number was already registered! Of course, it’s too late to return, but I’ll never buy again from the vendor! Be ware!

No detectable difference from the regular microphone - zero
Complete waste of money. No difference between the phone and iPad's microphones and adding this one.

Wonderful mic
I bought two other camera mics - both much cheaper. Sound quality is markedly different and noticeable. You pay more for this mic, but quality does show...
