A Stunning Look Back At Rock's Greatest Soap Opera
Pete Chrisp just does an absolutely amazing job with 'The Chain: 50 Years of Fleetwood Mac'. Even your average Mac fan knows the shifting line-ups, the emotional tumult of Rumours, but this unpacks all of that in visceral detail; and offers an in-depth look into periods of the band long forgotten, from Peter Green's British blues era, all the way to the 90s, when Fleetwood Mac suffered dramatic shifts in the cast, and 2003's Say You Will. I was worried that, given how little text there is on the some of the pages, it would be a brief glance over the band, opting instead for photo opportunities rather than gory unpickings. I can happily say it does not let up on the history, the facts, the chart certifications, the relationships, the reasons why. It's not afraid to cast an objective look over things, and admit when the band got it wrong. But the book is equally full of passion; full of a need to get to the heart and soul of what makes Fleetwood Mac the band it is; the enduring spark. You realise just *how much* these people have been through, and the wonderful music they've put out. And you wouldn't get all that if Chrisp didn't do such a magnificent job. It's a good sized book (about a record size which seems fitting), in stunning hardback, with a plethora of information. You have your Rumours, sure, but you have Tusk, Tango in the Night, Time, and everything which came before. I was a well-informed fan of the Mac before picking up this book, and I'm blown away by it all the same. It'll give you a lot to take in, but you can easily devour it for hours. Definitely recommend. Bravo.
