Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust
Molly O'Neill's New York Cookbook is a celebration of the New York Food world. She is the food columnist for The New York Times Magazine and spent five years working on this amazing book. The first recipe I tried was "Katie's Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust." The ingredients looked delicious with cinnamon and chocolate wafers for the crust and a rum and coffee flavored filling. I made it for Easter and everyone was very impressed.Since the author is a food columnist I knew she would be selecting winning recipes and so I felt confident enough to make the recipe for a big occasion without even trying it out at least one time for myself. I was very pleased with the results and can recommend the recipe to you for any occasion.Whether you are interested in trying lots of new recipes or you just enjoy reading cookbooks, the New York Cookbook has so much to offer. Page after page of delicious information mingle with the even more delicious recipes. Some of the fun recipes include:New York Penicillin - a chicken soup made by Aunt Marie Stacey. This stock/soup is then used in a variety of recipes and is very easy to make.Irish Soda Bread - Make two loaves of bread in no time at all.Simple Fresh Tomato Sauce - The perfect sauce for pasta made with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, oregano and a little brown sugar.Shrimp Fried RiceShish KebabsMeat LoafRosemary ChickenChicken PaprikasPan-Fried SoleYoko's Japanese Salad DressingMarrakesh CarrotsSome of the sweet treats include: "Coney Island Fudge" made with cream and semisweet chocolate, "Zoe Morsette's Oatmeal Macaroons," "Aunt Olga's Cardamom Cake," and "Katharine Hepburn's Brownies." If you love ice cream, you may want to try out the recipe for Hot Fudge Sauce and Butterscotch Sauce.A few of the highlights in this book include:Food Walks - Wander through food marketsA Few Essential Ingredients in Italian CookingManhattan Clam ChowderIn Search of New York SteakA Trip Down Menu LaneFestivalsThe New York Cookbook is an extremely well-researched feast that will satisfy the cerebral appetite as well as please your family and friends when you try out the delicious recipes. These recipes have been created by some of the best cooks in New York and you can use them with confidence, knowing you are making something wonderful for dinner or dessert. This cookbook was a wonderful gift from a friend who loves visiting New York and I already have plans to buy copies for friends and relatives. Just great, 'real' cooking!
Bought this well after the book's debut. Basically, it's like having a giant neighborhood in your kitchen: friends who'll share recipes with you for everything from everyday family dishes (brisket, meatloaf, mac casseroles), ethnic specialties (Jamaican, Cuban, Ethiopian, Indian, Israeli, Polish, Italian, French...), even restaurant dishes of the day. What's great is that they're all highly do-able at home. I have the original/first Gourmet cookbook, and the latest from them. Using these to compare (because all three are 'compilations') I'd put this one right behind the first Gourmet, but ahead of the second. My reasoning is that the first and second choices are strong on variety and cooking, while the recent Gourmet, which I ranked third, is long on techique/equipment/unusual ingredients. (It's not that unusual ingredients can't be found--most are in the average large supermarket. I sometimes want to spend a whole day on a meal--just not every day.) I clearly like the book--would buy it and would recommend it to friends/give as a gift...it's a go-to when you want to make something different but can't decide on what to make.

A wonderful cookbook
A really fascinating cook book, with wonderful historic photos from the past, and amazing recipies. I find too often these days, cook books have too much of the authors "story" when in fact most of us want the recipies. This book however, really is good reading. Highly recommended.

If you love the city of New York
I purchased this priceless book while dubbing an old VHS tape I had of Molly Neill (Molly O'Neil's New York) It was because of this tape that I got to try some of the fabulous, gastronomical restaurants that are mentioned in this gigantic book. The book is a compilation of many mouth-watering recipes of old, traditional and new restaurants, delis, bistros, and multicultural cafes in NYC. There are many background stories of how such restaurants got started, and how and why they prepare their delectable dishes. If you love the city of New York, this book should be a treasure on your shelf.

Good but some recipes are hit or miss
This book has the best spaghetti sauce recipe --my husband and I loved it--it was a way to bring NY cooking to Hawaii since there are not many good italian restaurants out here like in NY, which I miss. On the downside, not all recipes were good. For ex, I did not like the Madison Square burgers nor did I like the Pad Thai noodles (I tried recipes from Keo or Cooking light for Pad Thai which were better). I will try some more recipes from this book and hopefully will have better luck.

New York, New York!!
Not a new offering I know, but still relevant. If you are keen on American food it,s a fantastic read. Having recently visited New York for the first time i thrilled to find so many restaurants mentioned that I had actually seen and eaten in. Now I,ve got background info and recipes that I can try at home. If ever you thought that Americans only eat burgers steaks and ribs, get ready for a surprise, this book covers an amazing array of delights, can't wait to try them.

Awesome cookbook!
This book captures the essence of NYC and its philosophy of eating and sharing food, not only with some great recipes but also with photos and vignettes from the daily life of the greatest food market in the Western hemisphere! Crammed pages full of unexpected delights, much like the city itself! Personal faves: Moshe's Falafel and Firehouse Veal & Eggplant Parmigiano.

Die Frage ist ob man zuerst den Flug buchen soll oder doch erst den Herd anwerfen möchte.
