Summer reading that my daughter was waiting for book from library, ordered about ten days before school started. She had time to complete the reading and was ready for first day of school.

A Must Read
This is the best book there is. Should be required reading for all adults. Ellen Levine has gathered stories from about a dozen individuals who discuss their everyday experiences as children during the Civil Rights Movement. Extremely powerful material for adults and children. I used this class with my fourth graders- they were amazed to see the small, everyday defiances that were so key to the changes of the 1960s.

Outstanding Educational Value
Excellent review of youthful participants of the civil rights movement. Should be read by all young people so they have an understanding and appreciation of what these young people endured to assure equal rights for all people. Also introduced many people of the civil rights movement that few know anything about.

Classroom Uses
- have the students write letters responding to what they read.- in groups have the students learn about different sections and them have them teach each other what they learned.- They don't have to read it all. They can read excerpts of what interests them.

Just loved this book!
A great look at the Civil Rights movement from the perspective of a wide variety of people who participated in the various marches and demonstrations. So interesting, and an excellent viewpoint on what the movement was really like. Great book.

Really interesting collection
Bought this to use in class with teenagers. I think it works really well. The sources are of varying length and create a narrative, meaning you get a few sources covering the same or similar events, making it a great start for practising source comparison. Also: it's the voices of people who were the same age then as my pupils now which is inspiring to them.
