No. I am sensitive to foam smells and it was fine for me.

Will this provide support on a raised air bed with no headboard?

Yes, if the bed is up against the wall, if not against the wall, you can purchase a rug anti-slip mat/pad to prevent your pillow from moving around.

How well does this work when putting it between the box spring and mattress to lift of the top of the bed?

I"m not sure because I only use mine on top of the bed, but it is firm. I still dont think it will work in a good enough way because that will be alot of pressure on it.
