Victorian Fashion in America: 264 Vintage Photographs (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

I bought this as a reference for the costumes for "The Miracle Worker" play and it has been a huge help! Having real photos of people who are both upper and lower class has been extremely helpful! I would recommend this to any Costume Designer or anyone interested in the history of fashion!

This is exactly what I was hoping for- a guide to help me date the hundreds of old pictures I inherited. But I really wanted some specificity. Almost all of these captions read something, "A woman wearing a fashionable dress for the time." Ok, but.... what made it fashionable? Did she pick that time period because of the collar or the waist or the sleeves or... like... what? I really wanted to know the thought process behind each date, instead of each date.That being said, it's still helpful when I recognize trends (somewhat on my own) from the pictures and can link them to unlabelled photos I have. I would love way more books to be published on this subject!

Victorian Fashion in America is a compilation of 264 photographs from the Victorian Age which I purchased on Amazon.It is amazing that women, especially, took such care and time in their elaborate clothing during the nineteenth century. It is even more amazing that they actually did things like ride bicycles and play tennis.I often wonder how shocked these beautifully dressed women would be to see the scant clothing that modern women wear today. One thing is for sure, it takes less time today to get dressed!

As a writer, I've found this book to be a wonderful resource for my historical mysteries set in Kansas City around a hundred years or so ago. But it's also an engaging book for anyone interested in history to scroll through to find out how people really dressed in America in the 19th century.

Wonderful book of antique photos..I bought it for a reference guide for clothing worn..Author gives detailed info on clothing & dates if known..It has more than served the purpose I bought it for...Good clear photos of a wide range of different people & clothing...

As a writer of Victorian historical fiction, this book is an invaluable resource; however, it is also a wonderful history of the fashion of the times and well worth the read. Well worth owning for anyone who wants to know how others lived and dressed.
