Slate Chalkboard and Supplies Kit (Starter Print)

The Handwriting Without Tears slate chalkboard and supplies kit has been such a helpful tool in our homeschool! My daughter actually looks forward to handwriting practice now, which is saying a lot. The slate board is the perfect size for little hands, and the chalk + sponge method makes letter formation feel less overwhelming and more like play. I love that it follows the HWT approach of simple, step-by-step strokes. The tactile aspect of writing with chalk, then erasing with a sponge, really reinforces memory and helps build fine motor control. The board itself is sturdy and easy to clean, and the kit comes with everything we need to get started. We’ve been using it daily for both letters and numbers, and I can already see an improvement in my child’s confidence. This kit is a great investment if you’re teaching early handwriting — whether at home or in the classroom. It’s simple, durable, and effective!

We are using this along with the Handwriting without Tears app and books. Our OT highly recommends HWT and we have been really happy with the variety of practice methods and sensory experiences involved. After using the app, our daughter is thrilled to use the small slate board, chalk, and sponges. The instructions included with the chalkboard are pretty skimpy, but the app is good. This is a nice companion kit for the Handwriting Without Tears program. The size of the board and small chalk is perfect for little hands working on their grip. It provides a nice frame of reference for practicing letters when first becoming familiar with them, and while working up the strength to write with pencils. The small sponges are a fun touch, as the kids get double the practice while wiping the letter off. I think it's expensive though. Nearly $30 is a LOT for a small chalkboard, plain white chalk, 3 pencils, a letter reference, 3 tiny cut up sponges and a few crayons. I didn't need most of that stuff. All I really wanted was the chalkboard, and you can get 4x6 chalkboards on their own for much less. At least the money supports a good program. It is helping my son a lot.

This chalkboard is so great to teach kids capital letter formation in a fun, engaging way (when trained in the HWT method). I am an Occupational Therapist and this was my bread and butter when it came to handwriting practice! I also love the short pencils and crayons to encourage tripod grasp.

I have used this program for years and years to teach and improve handwriting in my pediatric occupational therapy practice. Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) is truly the gold standard, in my opinion. The chalkboard is a great way to learn and practice individual letters in different modes (writing with chalk, tracing with a wet sponge, etc.). 12/10 recommend this set!

Hmmm! I thought it would be a bit bigger than what it actually is. I like it and I’m glad I bought it so I can compare with other similar products. I gave it 3 stars mainly because of the price. If you have more than one kid and want to use it for homeschooling or even in your classroom it will not be so affordable. All in all, for what the product is, not worth the price. I will be comparing durability and ease of use with my little ones.

As a former special educator, we always started handwriting on a blackboard. Love that this is actual slate for more traction while students write. The size is perfect for young students to keep their letter formation under control. Also, the golf sized pencils and small chalk etc are that way for a purpose! Easy for kids to grasp correctly. Love the multi-sensory approach with wet/dry/write including the sponges.

Way too expensive. It’s cheaper to buy individually. I was very disappointed.
