Polar Bears and Penguins: A Compare and Contrast Book

This teacher is not impressed...
I was so excited to receive this book, as we are deep into our nonfiction unit with penguins as our focus. The concept behind this book is great, one nonfiction text that would compare and contrast, use those signal words, include colorful photographs, and show students how comparative texts are written. However, if trying to show students the format of topic/main idea, details, conclusion this would not be ideal. The amount of information is lacking and there is no strong opening and no conclusion.I wish information would have been more specific, as students love to know/share unique facts. The facts are so general, possibly for preschool. I would have loved to use this but my students would need so much more to help them expand their comparative skills.I will leave this in our library because it does have large fonts, at an early reader level, and the words "compare and contrast" right on the title, but I will have to find another book as a mentor text.

Great read for animal lovers!
Perfect book for a beginner who loves animal facts. Although my son is knows a lot about both animals he still enjoyed reading and discovering a few new facts he didn’t know.

Compare and Contrast early reading
A big emphasis in education and reading is compare and contrast. This is a book that assists in that goal for young children.
