Review: A fast and well built network adapter that makes sense for higher speed networks - This is one of those adapters that sits slightly above the usual USB-C Ethernet dongles because it targets faster than gigabit networking rather than just basic connectivity. If you already run 2.5GbE or 5GbE networking, it can make a noticeable difference for large file transfers, backups or NAS usage compared to standard gigabit adapters. The addition of USB-C power passthrough is also genuinely useful, especially on devices with limited ports like MacBooks and iPads where losing a charging port just to gain Ethernet would otherwise be frustrating. Build quality is typical of Cable Matters, with a solid aluminium housing that helps with heat and a braided cable that feels more durable than cheaper adapters. In use it seems stable and reliable, with plug and play behaviour on macOS and generally straightforward setup on Windows provided the correct Realtek drivers are installed if needed. Heat management also seems reasonable under sustained transfers, which is important for something designed for higher throughput networking. The main reality check is that most people will never see the headline 5Gbps speeds. You need compatible switches, cabling and storage fast enough to actually benefit, otherwise it will just run at gigabit or 2.5GbE like a cheaper adapter would. It is also fairly specialised, as it only provides Ethernet and power passthrough rather than acting as a full multiport dock. Overall though, if you specifically want faster wired networking without stepping up to 10GbE costs, it is a sensible middle ground that does what it claims.
Review: Fast transfer speeds - Connecting my laptop to the office network with this adapter significantly increased file transfer speeds. Pulling large video files from the server happens in a fraction of the time compared to standard gigabit connections. The metal casing feels solid and durable. Plugging my power cable into the pass-through port keeps my laptop charged while I work, freeing up another port on the machine. The adapter gets surprisingly hot to the touch during heavy data transfers, which is slightly concerning but has not affected performance yet. The braided cable connecting to the laptop is stiff, making it difficult to position flat on the desk. The network connection remains stable without any random dropouts or disconnects. It worked immediately upon plugging it in without requiring any manual driver installations. It adds a bit of bulk to my laptop bag, but the speed benefits justify carrying it. The connection clicks firmly into the network port. It requires a compatible network infrastructure to actually achieve the higher speeds.

## Features

- USB-C to 5GbE Ethernet Adapter (5GBASE-T): Get up to 5,000Mbps RJ45 wired speed for 4K/8K streaming, gaming, video calls and large file transfers. For full 5Gbps, your USB-C port must support USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps)+ and you need 5GbE network equipment.
- 140W USB-C Power Delivery: Charge a MacBook or USB-C laptop while using Ethernet. Supports USB-C PD up to 140W with a compatible PD charger and USB-C charging cable (charger/cable not included). Ideal for desk setups, docking stations and travel.
- Stable Low-Latency Networking: Realtek RTL8157 chipset delivers consistent throughput with efficient power/heat management, typically more reliable than Wi-Fi for remote work and content creation. Auto-negotiates 5Gbps/2.5Gbps/1Gbps/100Mbps to match your router/switch.
- Premium Aluminium Housing + Braided Cable: Durable aluminium shell helps dissipate heat; braided USB-C pigtail adds flexibility and strain relief to reduce wear during daily plug/unplug use.
- Wide Compatibility & Driver Notes: Works with Thunderbolt 5/4/3, USB4 and USB-C data ports (also functions as an ethernet to USB-C adapter) on MacBook, iMac, Dell XPS, Surface and iPad Pro. macOS is plug-and-play (keep macOS updated). Windows or some Linux kernels may perform best with the latest Realtek RTL8157 driver. Not supported on most Android devices.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great quality, plug and play
*by A***X on 7 April 2026*

This Cable Matters USB-C to 5 Gigabit network adaptor is about as simple as a piece of hardware gets. It utilises generic drivers included with both Windows and Mac computers so is plug and play. Anyone who uses a laptop from the last decade or so should probably have one of these as there almost certainly won’t be a network port on your laptop. There will inevitably come a day when there is an issue with your WiFi and an ethernet connection is required to diagnose/repair. Additionally if you need the added security of a wired connection this offers good speeds at up to 5Gbps with a compatible router as well as backwards compatibility to function with 2.5GbE and 1GbE. For those with limited USB-C ports there is also a PD pass through charging function to keep your laptop powered up. The device itself is solidly built with an aluminium body and a sensible length cable long enough not to over stress the USB-C port but short enough not to be unwieldy. Priced at £30 at time of review this is fair value for a quality high spec adaptor.
