Why does the unit show 236volts when my Multimeter shows 240-245volts which is nearer the advertised voltage supplied by the electric company

There is a misunderstanding about UK voltages in a home and the required tolerances.  There is no effective constant 230V supply and what you get depends largely on the distance from your local sub-station transformer as well as other factors such as electricity demand.  The FREQUENCY (50Hz) is very tightly controlled but the voltage is not.  In the UK, mains electricity is currently required by law to be delivered at 230 Volts, within a tolerance of +10% / -6%, that is, within the range 253 Volts to 216.2 Volts. The value of 230 Volts is said to be the 'nominal voltage' in an electrical system.  Appliances are normally manufactured with this tolerance in mind BUT some devices using switch-mode power supplies (e.g. laptop PSUs) can run from ~100V up to ~250V - this will be quoted on the appliance or PSU (power supply unit).   https://www.twothirtyvolts.org.uk/pdfs/site-info/Explanation_230Volts.pdf

Does this tell you if the socket is earthed/grounded?

Yes, it tells you if the Earth / Ground is Open, Live and Ground reversed or Live /Ground Reversed, missing ground. Very easy to read and use, there is even a display with the voltage.  It also tests the Circuit Breakers (RCD) for the sockets. Good value for piece of mind.

How do I know if my socket is properly connected to the Earth?
 I want to use an earthing product that requires to use an earth connection plug.

You need to be clear in what your asking.
This will show you if your socket is wired correctly. 
Reversal of neutral or live or a short circuit.

It will not tell you if the earth is not connected.
