U-POL Etching Primer, Strong-Hold, Gray

I’ve tried enough primers over the years to know that not all of them belong on bare metal. When I’m starting with freshly stripped parts, I want an etching primer that’s designed for the job, and this one didn’t disappoint. It arrived quickly and was packaged well with no dents or leaks. The spray pattern was even, the nozzle didn’t clog, and it was easy to build light, consistent coats without runs. I used it on bare metal before applying primer surfacer and paint, and it provided an excellent foundation. Good prep work is everything, and starting with the proper etching primer gives me much more confidence that the finish will hold up over time. The coverage was excellent, it dried as expected, and it gave me exactly what I was looking for—a quality base coat before moving on to the next steps. Worked great on my old mailbox post as a primer. Good coverage and dried quickly. However, it was NOT grey, but instead flat black. Because I covered it with black enamel top coat this wasn’t an issue for me. But if you really want grey to match the can too, you may be disappointed.

The U-POL Etching Primer is an excellent choice for preparing bare metal surfaces before painting. The 10 oz can is easy to use, and the spray application goes on evenly, providing a solid base for topcoats. I used it on metal parts that were prone to rust, and the anti-rust technology really impressed me. It provides great adhesion, and the gray color makes it easy to see the coverage area. The finish is smooth, and it’s perfect for both automotive and other metal projects.

This product sprays really nice. But it’s not gray it's more of a slate color. The color didn't make much difference to me. See photos.
