Created by Humphrey Barclay to showcase the emerging talents of a young David Jason, this Cold War comedy series charts the inexplicable successes of Edgar Briggs a clueless counter-espionage agent who inspires fear in the hearts of enemy agents, and sheer terror amongst his fellow colleagues!Somehow, the bungling Briggs has reached a position of responsibility within the Intelligence Service, and directs a team of sensible men and women. Despite their attempts to restrain him, he still manages to cause chaos wherever he goes. Yet Briggs always gets his man; the reason could be that, judging others by his own standards, he believes that everyone else is a fool...

To Be Rediscovered (Or Discovered)
This is one of those gems that got lost in the recesses of time... If you can, watch it. It's pure brilliancy in 25-minute doses. Wonderful.

The spy who came...and fell flat on his face!
This hilarious show was originally on ITV, not the BBC as another reviewer claims. Spy spoofs tend to vary in quality, from the wonderful 'Carry On Spying' to the dire 'Austin Powers' and 'Johnny English' movies. In 1974, David Jason landed his first lead role, as incompetent British secret agent Edgar Briggs. It is not a rip-off of 'Get Smart'. Briggs has more in common with 'Frank Spencer' than 'Maxwell Smart'. The world he operates in is more like Callan's than Bond. There is visual comedy aplenty, meaning the show was popular at the time with youngsters ( and even made it onto the front cover of an edition of Look-In ). As the spy fad had ended by 1974, it was not the hit it deserved to be, and Jason would be next seen on the box in 'Lucky Feller'.

Takes me back to the 1970s
I've been waiting a long time for this recording to become available. I remember the comedy series. The plots are weak but David Jason is excellent and carries the series. This excellent to view during the current pandemic for a bit of escapism. One can see how David Jason developed and reused some of the slapstick humour in later programmes.I suspect the whacky humour would not appeal to everybody and I have the nostalgic element of viewing this DVD

Not worth the time it took to transfer the show tapes to DVD
I had a memory of watching this, when I was young boy. It aired on Friday nights and what I remembered most was the opening titles. Edgar Briggs carries a document file into a cafe and in the process of eating his cooked breakfast, somehow gets egg yolk all over it.Alas that's all I remember and this maybe the one and only time that I will buy something out of nostalgia. My wife and I sat down to watch the first episode. My wife, who is Norwegian and knew nothing about this show, was already filled with scepticism and not without reason either. We painfully watched the first episode without raising so much as a titter. Subsequently, the DVD was placed in the back of our DVD cabinet, to be forgotten. This was not one of David Jason greatest moments, despite he trying so hard to deliver lines that were as funny a broken ankle. My wife and I are both David Jason fans, me because of Open All Hours and Still Open All Hours and both us having enjoyed Frost and Darling Buds. I would rather pay good money to have those shows on DVD instead.

Not my cup of tea
I think David Jason is ver talanred and I don't want to take anything from him, open all hours, only fools and horses and inspector Morse, but felt this serious was more for Rowan Akinson. Not used to seeing David Jason playing a silly part as his comedies are very funny and talented, but enjoyed it but not for me but yes it is upto our personal tastes.

Forgotten gem
I really enjoyed this show when it was originally transmitted, and for many years I never dreamt I would ever see it again - thank heavens for the DVD age. The show is not perfect but has it's moments and is very nostalgic for anyone who remembers the seventies. I still cry with laughter at the scene where Briggs pushes the lawn mower across the shag pile carpet in his lounge showering everybody with carpet filaments
