The drive works just like it is supposed to, no complaints on performance. It burns dvd's fast. Low noise, low vibrations even at high rotation speeds. One USB connection makes this a really simple DVD player to connect to your laptop or desktop PC (most others require 2 usb connections). I have burned 6 DVD's so far and the speed is much faster than my older DVD burner. I plugged this burner into a USB2 drive, and performance was still good. One connection, and it works. No drivers, no muss, no fuss. And a big plus is that my drive detection software says the internal drive is actually a HP drive. So I took out the two screws that hold the case together and sure enough, it says Hewlett Packard aka HP on the drive. Nice to know the internals are a quality name brand and not some no name drive. I am very pleased with this external DVD player/burner. It performs better than my expectations. BTW, this drive is recognized by the BIOS on startup so if you want to run a recovery CD/DVD, the drive will be listed as a boot choice. Outstanding. If you have Win10, make sure the PC is updated to Win10 VM 1910 for simple plug and play.

If you're in need of a CD, DVD, or RW drive in 2019, you're not going to do any better than this product. I recently went to Frys, Best Buy, and the consumer box stores (Target, Walmart) in hunt for a relic. No box stores carry these external drives, at a reasonable price. They're out there if your patient, and willing to pay a premium. But, why? Order this product for a very reasonable price, and save your self some time. As for the product, it simply works. I plugged it into roughly 4 PCs, and it works as expected. The drive has a handy slot to keep the usb wire out of the way when being stored. A simple and handy solution to keep things organized. You will still need software to do tasks like watch DVD movies, or burn music CDs. But from a pure hardware perspective, this is great value.

I have given this unit 5 stars but I did have to return the first unit. The product arrived and the housing design is very nice. I had problems right from the start and it just got worse each time I tried something different. It did not respond to software eject commands and would not read any dvds or cds at all. I actually got lucky once and I can tell it read my dvd but I clicked the eject button by accident and when I pushed the tray back in, it was a no go never to read anything again. I do run linux but the drivers are very good and I have never had issues with any other models. I thought this thing was complete junk and jumped back on amazon to get a full money back. I thought about it a second and remembered why I even purchased it in the first place and it was because of the great reviews, so instead, I requested a replacement and thought I would give it another try. I am so glad I did. The replacement unit arrived the next day, I tried the unit, not having too high expectations, and I was very pleased indeed. It is certainly a sharp looking unit and it worked absolutely flawlessly and as expected and absolutely zero issues. This was weeks ago and still it works fantastic. Bottom line, every once in a while you are dealt a lemon. It happens, and this is not the first time it has happened to me. I communicated a little bit with the seller and explained my issue and they seem like some great folks, very helpful, sincere and apologetic. In the end, the reviews on Amazon helped me choose a real winner. Really a 5 star product and only downgrading by 1 star ONLY because of the return.

CD player plugs into laptop or desktop and works great out of the box. The price was phenomenal and the quality is good.

I received this as a Mother's Day gift. However, I was not able to use it until this past week (June 10). It is useless. Really, I cannot get it to do anything. Of course, my return window is closed, so I can't return it. I have a Dell laptop (less than 18 months old) with Windows 10. It seems simple enough to use (plug into a USB port) but it is the most finicky electronic product I have ever used. It will start working (so I can listen to the item on my cd, or import it to iTunes), then it stops intermittently, then makes this awful, loud noise like it's an old, churning vhs player, then it stops. Half of the time I cannot even get the open/close button to work to get my cd out. So, I can't use it to play music. I can't use it to import my cds to iTunes. I can't use it for anything. There is no contact information on the seller - to ask a question, find out about warranty information, is there a simple trouble shoot fix? I've scoured other reviews and the only info I find is to download Nero (which version? Spend more money on a program to burn when I've already purchased the dvd player?). So very disappointed. I'll not purchase again from this seller.

Purchased for my 10 year old daughter whose laptop lacked a DVD drive to install a game. We didn't want to spend much since it would be mostly a single use item, so we took a chance on this drive. Installation was simple and Windows 10 installed the basic drivers automatically. We then installed the included software and VLC so she would have the ability to burn discs (should the need arise) and to watch DVDs. Everything worked exactly as expected and without difficulty. It's lightweight and feels sturdy. The included cable is thick and also feels built to last. The only tiny caveat is that the feet on the bottom don't hold it off the table high enough to always eject the tray. If it's set on top of something, or at the edge of the table, it's not a problem.

I needed to burn some DVDs, and found out that the drive on my new computer had been sacrificed to pick up some extra USB ports. I ordered this based on price and reviews. It worked fine, but the bleeping cord was too short to fit either on top of my tower or next to it on the desk. It was good that I had an extension kicking around in my junk box. It might be find for someone who wants to carry it to use with a laptop, but it's not designed for use with a tower like mine. I would rather have it come with a detachable USB cord.
