Way Too Expensive for a piece of foam!
I have used these sponge filters for years. They do a good job of collecting matter before it reaches your filter, but once full they compact to a compressed gooey blob that barely allows water to flow through. Pull off and clean it, but you will be rinsing and squeezing for a long time to get it clean. That said, these sponges hold up to multiple cleanings and are simple to put on and take off. I keep several clean spares around, in case I don’t have an hour to rinse a dirty one out. Don’t leave your spares in direct Sun! It breaks them down quickly! My only big complaint is that they have raised the price to double now and they’re just not worth $20 a piece, the flimsy little plastic cage the filter slides onto does not hold up well and definitely doesn’t warrant the cost. I’ll be looking for a replacement.

Works OK
Use the filters in my small 125 gallon pond with a 700GPH pump. When new, they work really well, not having to clean out the filter for a couple of days. But, after they wear down some, have to clean it out more frequently. Sometimes 2x's a day. Overall, it works OK for my needs. Haven't found another filter that is as good.

Saves a lot of cleaning over the standard filter.
We have two fountains, both with 850 GPH pumps. We get wind-driven dust and dirt that gathers on the fountains and washes into the sump underneath. Typically, the standard filters would get cleaned a couple times a month to maintain proper flow. As the old filter foam deteriorated, I started looking for a better and larger filter media so I wuldn't have to clean them as often. This product takes care of those needs nicely. Two of these filters have been in service since January 2013. At the time of this initial review, I have yet to need to service either filter. Fountain flows are still excellent. Had I known earlier that this was available, I would have jumped at the chance to install it sooner. Don't get me wrong, I **love** moving rocks and fumbling with the filters to get them out and clean them ;). Even more, I **love** not having to.

Extra large pre-filter doesn' come with large plastic insert.
Too small plastic insert. Why doesnt someone sell just the inserts or an adapter. I have ordered here before and they fit.

Just right for my pond pump
This works great. This is the 3rd pump filter I have purchased! Not because I love them so much, but because something keeps jumping into my backyard pond, pulling it off and out and shredding it in the night!! I wake up with little pieces of it all over the lawn! So I finally built a metal cage to put around this one! Boy, I have foiled that darn critter!!

Thank Goodness for Amazon.
We recently had our only pond store go out of business. Since then, I have looked high-n-low for these pre-filters. I have an older model Little Giant pump, and could not find a replacement filter anywhere - even the LG website no longer even lists our model, nor do they list a dealership that carries these filters. I came across this, and though it does not list LG as one of the brands, I decided to take a chance. IT FITS!I'm so happy, as the pump is still the best we've ever used. As expected, the pre-filters need replaced every 2-3 years.I bought two, so I can change them out for cleaning without even having to unplug the pump.

pretty good strainer
I use these filters/strainers in my garden pond and I've seen ones like this that are way overpriced but this one is less so. Longer, cylindrical shaped ones go as much as $10 which I think in ridiculous, this one at $4 is better, but still a lot of money for something that probably cost pennies to make. The hard plastic insert wouldn't stay on the plastic pipe on my pump but I have others that do. It has more surface area and goes longer without needing to be changed.
