The plates that crush the pills have groves so you can move the pill bag slightly between pumping the handle and it will crush to a fine powder. Again I recommend the Silent Knight bags because they are sturdy enough not to get holes and you can get most the pill residue with little effort. I use a plastic spoon since I mix the pills in applesauce. **Q: Can you not use any pouches/bags when you use this crusher? It adds to costs.** A: You have to use a baggie. You put the pill in the baggie and place the baggie in the crusher. Ziploc type bags don't work as they are not durable enough. The bags are a must. **Q: can you crush meds that in capsules and not tablets?** A: Not sure why you would want to do that. You can cut capsules.
