Does it cancel background noise well on the microphone?

Yes, I have had very good results with background noise cancellation. For instance my dogs were barking a few rooms away and the people on the other end could not hear them.

I pugged the usb in and hear nothing. Calls do not go thru the headset but thru computer speaker. What am I missing? thx

Not knowing what OS you're using makes helping tough. i can tell you this though, I use them on my work laptop which is running Windows 10 Pro and they worked for me with no interaction on my part and I have limited admin rights on my laptop. I would suggest you check your audio settings to see if they are even being seen by the OS and it might be something as easy as selecting them in audio settings. Another possibility is you need to install a driver for them. I think your best bet is to do a google search on "Sennheiser SC 30 headset not working" and see what that finds for you. Going to the Sennheiser website would be another good option, they may have specific instructions based on your hardware and OS.
