I haven't tried to nail them, but I would expect them to break if you did. They are a light composite material that feels quite brittle. If you really need to fix them in place I would suggest drilling a hole in them and then nailing or screwing them down through the hole.

Could these level a 20 gallon aquarium ?

If you are asking whether it will handle the weight of 20 gallons of water in addition to the weight of the tank and its stand, I don't see why not. I am using these to lean back to the wall two 4' solid wood bookcases placed on top of each other with mending plates (so 8' tall bookcase) filled with approximately 3000 dvds. However, I would probably at least lower the water level in your aquarium since if you can't empty it first since the water is likely to slosh around a bit. I would more be worried about whether the stand your aquarium sits on has the right leg design to withstand the shock of using these shims to level a 20 gallon aquarium if you plan on doing it while there is water in the aquarium.
