Lavishly illustrated, the 256 page directory of breeds is presented by group in the order: non-sporting, working, herding, gundogs, hounds, terriers and toy. The background to each breed is detailed - its origins, development, characteristics and, where applicable, mode of working. Breed standards are given as well as care boxes for at a glance tips for looking after each breed. Also featured are some 79 rare breeds, ranging from the ancient Hellenic Hound to the highly specialized Lundehund, or Norwegian Puffin Dog. An introductory sections covers the history of dogs, ranging back over the millennia to the wild dogs which first warmed themselves at the fires of early humans. There follow sections on the anatomy, physiology, and psychology of the dog, and specialist terminology is illustrated with examples taken from the breeds featured in the Encyclopedia. Photographs, maps, and drawings show how particular conformations and characteristics have evolved into groupings which are recognized today. Very Useful in my grooming salon!
This is a book I purchased to keep in the waiting area of my pet salon. Kids waiting on their dogs to be groomed have loved flipping through and looking at all the different breeds, and it has been useful when mixed breeds come in to try and guess what kind of dogs they are, as well as show owners examples of breed cuts, although some of the pictures do not show the dogs in their breed cut. Overall, this has been great to have.

Not complete but great
Excelllent for clients to look at and surprisingly informative. Does not contain all dog breeds.

Beautifully illustrated & detailed book of dog breeds
I saw a copy of this book in my vet’s office & fell in love! I just had to have my own copy. It has not been a disappointment. Fantastic!

A Compleat Book for Lovers of Dogs
We've been watching dog shows for years, and I'd go online to search out information about breeds with which we weren't familiar. Finally, we decided to get a real Book of the Dog, so to speak. And this book is just perfect for us. With two pictures (minimum) of each breed, included in the text for each are a complete description of breed requirements, temperament, grooming requirements, and other information necessary if one is considering giving a home to a particular breed. This book includes all AKC breeds, and is a joy to use when we want more complete information on any breed recognized by the club.

Great Book
THis book has met all our expectations. It is thorough and gives good pictures and info about the various breeds of dogs. We had no problem getting it on time and it was in excellent shape. We will definitely use Amazon and this seller again if they have the items we are looking for.

Really cool
I bought this as a present for my cousin'a 20th birthday. The book is really nice, contains a lot of pictures and information for many types of breeds. I especially like it because its not too over-wellming with dog facts. it explains in words that anyone can understand. Over all i would reccomend this book to a friend.

No pictures of my blue tick coon hound.
I was a bit disappointed in this book. The title itself made me think it would have a decent amount of pictures... that is not true! Many breeds mentioned in this book don't even have a picture. There is an entire section called "rare breeds" that are lacking photos. I ordered this book to help our family pick a forever friend for our Blue tick coon hound (which is one of the breeds NOT pictured!) But aside from breeding and show dog info this book isn't that great. I will be keeping it because the kids like to look at the pictures but it's not a book I would recommend. Also I bought a used copy in "very good condition". It had a sticker on it, the paper cover that wraps around the hardback is torn and has definitely seen better day. I would hardly call this "very good"

Disappointing
The book is in good used condition which is fine BUT it's missing the paper jacket cover which was a big disappointment. There's no indication what the book is about when you first see it -- it's not inviting whatsoever.... just a dark unexciting plain drab book.... until you open it.... then it's wonderful.

When i received this book it looked like it was used , with a discolored and ripped cover .
