The First Music Trio
If you like old-time music, you'll love this! I'm still trying to find a favorite from this collection.(I haven't yet-I like them too much just to pick one song out of the bunch). I do have one tiny little problem-and someone else mentioned this as well-it's advertised as being "Remastered"-Don't be fooled it's not. I was a bit disappointed with that at first, but after listening to the whole collection for a few days, I came to love it. Adds to the overall listening experience. These were after all, the early recordings made from a budding industry, with what was then considered new technologies. The Carter Family were some of the founding members of not just the country/bluegrass/folk genre but of the music industry as a whole. Them and a handful of others shaped and influenced not just the industry of their day but the future generations as a whole. I first learned "Wildwood Flower" in high school and "Single Girl, Married Girl" as well. It was only later that I discovered the original("Wildwood Flower") was actually older than that-way older than that (It was published in 1860 as "I'll Twine 'Mid The Ringlets" among other names). Not only did they help to invent the music industry, but re-worked and retooled older songs like that one and reintroduced it to a whole new generation. This music is truly timeless, and while it may come back around from time to time in different variations and forms I don't think anyone-and I mean anyone can replicate the success of what some have called "the first {Country}music trio" . And in many respects they were-not only the first Country group-but also the first commercial success of at that time-a new industry-of which a lot of people were to say the least, I think, skeptical. And it paid off. It paid off big time .So to get back on topic I recommend this if, 1. You're a musicologist/historian, 2. You-like me have heard a remake-and wondered what the original sounded like or how the original song really went-Yes, "Cups" generation I mean you-It was originally just "When I'm Gone"-and trust me it sounds a lot better than you may think, it's also a bit more depressing than you may think when you really stop to think about it, given the current version out there (You'll see why if you read the little bio/liner-notes that are included). 3. You're an old soul, like my family seems to think I am. And considering I just brought this, it's probably true:) Love, Enjoy, and of course I recommend this. Whew. Done. No, seriously, folks, this just may be the longest review I've ever written:)

IF YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR MOUNTAIN FROM YOUR COUNTRY AND BLUE GRASS, THIS'LL TEACH YA!
Listened to some of these songs on vinyl when I was doing a degree in "Insects" - sat right next to my microscopes so I could just lift the arm and play it over-and-over-and-over - and yep, every one of those songs on the old Vinyl LP is here plus many more. And when I hear some of them it's without the cracks and crackles and thumps of the LP -- crystal clear sounds -- which still bring back memories of what alcohols, either, and other solvents smell like and images of the anatomy of various insects - Can't say this was a bad purchase - crisp and clean an clear as they day they all sat down in that room and sang around a dangling microphone in the middle of the Masters.

Treasure trove of wonderful listening
This set of CDs exceeded my expectations for recordings of this vintage. I love old time, traditional country music and the Carter Family are tops. I enjoy the large number of songs available, many of which are seldom heard and new to me. I had low expectations for sound quality of recordings made in the 30's but these have been well restored and sound good for their age when I play them on my stereo system. Of course they are not hifi or comparable to today's digital recordings but still very good, all things considered. I would recommend this set of CDs to anyone who loves this type of music and the Carter Family tradition.

Great value, but start with volume II.
If you are just beginning to explore The Carter Family, begin by purchasing Volume II. Volume I has all of their early recordings, which are in lesser sound quality. Volume II is not only in better sound quality, but finds the Carter's at the peak of their powers. Also, they re-recorded some of their most important early songs, and they are included on Volume II in much better sound quality. This set is a great value, and I own both. However, if you want to start somewhere to see if you like the Carter Family, begin with Volume II.

Great price, great content!
I listened to these CDs in one sitting, it was so captivating. JSP has done a very good job at remastering, and if you want a comparison then go to [...] click on 78s, then click on Artist, then click on C to get to the Carter Family. They have entire songs from original 78 records as well as from tapes from original records. Listen to the samples on Amazon and compare them to the originals. The remastering is so good that you can hear Maybelle's nails on the strings of her guitar, and you can hear Sara's autoharp ringing in the background. This set is 100% recommended. If you want to listen to the roots of our musical heritage, listen to the Carter family!

fantastic music, "remastered" claim is a bit strong
You expect a bit of static with old recordings. But when they are remastered you don't expect that every song will sound like somebody's shaking gravel around in a metal pan right next to the mic. This is the first time in years I've head to mess with my EQ.Of course, the Carter Family is the Carter Family. Which is to say, fantastic. There's a lot of music here, but if you're after high quality recordings you might have better luck elsewhere. I'll leave it to the reader to do the cost/benefit analysis.

Re mastered Carter Family Recordings
Even though these recordings are only two track monaural, they sound much better than the original records would have if they were being played on an acoustic spring wound phonograph because there is no background noise or scratches which was always a problem with older recordings.I believe the people who digitally re mastered these recordings did a fantastic job. I had a doctor's appointment in UT Tyler today and I really enjoyed listening to the Carter Family on our Toyota Celica's CD player.

I have always deemed Carter Family my favourite folk music/singers of all time. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes folk music. When these CDs stopped being available in the shops, and were no longer in print,I was ready to search on-line for anyone able to sell these very CDs to me

Worried Man Blues" "Wabash Cannonball" "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" "Wildwood Flower" "Keep on the Sunny Side" などの名曲300余りを残している。

Carter Family at Their Best
I just love these recordings by the Carter Family. As you might know this was the first group to sing a Blue Grass style. There voices are clear and the instrumental pieces are as good as any Blue Grass music today. I would strongly recommend that you purchase a copy, and I'm pretty sure you will not be disappointed.
