Well made, but thin blade...
Ok, like many people looking for a 4-inch pointing trowel, this was purchased for an archaeologist....in this case an American. I'll get onto that.Firstly, this product arrived quickly, well packaged, good service. It's welded, not rivetted (most importantly), it has a soft grip which is great for prolonged use. However...It's going to sound puerile to non-archaeologists (because it is), but there has always been a friendly rivalry on which is the better - the British Spear & Jackson WHS 4-inch pointing trowel, or those used in other countries. Obviously, the Americans choose an American brand - the Marshalltown. My problem is that the blade is considerably thinner than the British made one, to the point of being 'springy' (something you can't say about the WHS). Because of this, I suspect it wouldn't cope well with the type of 'work-horse' use a normal trowel gets on a dig (where it can be used both for delicate work and as a mini mattock!). Any WHS trowel that has done the rounds eventually gets worn down, this one will naturally wear down much more quickly. So, in effect, I'm going to continue boring people with why the WHS is superior. After all that, having pointed a few walls in my time, I suspect this lighter weight, soft grip trowel would be absolutely ideal for actually pointing mortar!!!

Marshall pointer
Tbh anything Marshall make theses days seem to not last as long as they did 10 years ago like they use not as hard metal anymore so the pointers and brick jointers wear down very fast these days either that Or I’m working faster than Flash Gordon 😂

Good quality, but maintenance is required.
Fairly good at what it does, but it will rust easily if not washed and dried shortly after using it.

The perfect trowel
Bought as an archaeology excavation trowel. Very easy on the wrist (very light) and have worked perfectly on heavy dense clay sites. Much preferable to other similar size trowels due to its lightness and thinness, you can easily peel of the clay in layers and end up with smooth and nice edges. Might take a while to get used to if you're not used to lightweight trowels to begin with. A must have in my tool roll.
