Inspiring
Over the years I’ve heard a number of great quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt. I never realized she had books published until I came across this one. My high exceptions were met and then some. While not necessarily an autobiography, near the end of her life Eleanor Roosevelt compiled the lessons she learned through various experiences. Each life lesson is nicely organized into each chapter of the book, making it easy to read out of order if so desired.Though I’d personally consider it more of an inspirational read than self-help, her eloquent writing and zest for life were uplifting. I started by listening to the audiobook version and then purchased a copy halfway through. Is her advice practical to the average person in the modern age where we have new sets of problems that were not around in her lifetime? Not quite how it was presented, however, her words are stepping stones.

An admirable woman with some good advice for us all
I'd give this book 4.5 stars out of 5. It is an impressive book, written by an intelligent, persevering, patient and empathetic woman who found herself thrust into the limelight of politics and who made a real success of her life in spite of the many difficulties she faced. I found her advice quite straightforward, no-nonsense, honest and helpful. She really did 'learn by living', and that is the message her short book imparts. It's possible to grow and change with experience, if you tackle the challenges that life tosses you rather than evade them. She meant that if we face our fears, we will grow as human beings. She was way ahead of her time in terms of how she lived her life and how she looked at her life as a woman.

Kindly Common Sense and More
Probably one of the most famous First Ladies, Eleanor Roosevelt will be best known for re-defining the role and expectations of all subsequent USA presidents' wives. However she also made her own independent contribution particularly after the death of her husband, President Franklin D Roosevelt, not the least of which was in the workings of the United Nations Organisation. Gossip about her relationship with her husband and others aside, she was a remarkable woman. Perhaps more than many, she paved the way for the development and empowering of women in the later 20th centuryThis book was written, she says, in reponse to many questions asked by women over the years, and as such it is partly a warm, delightful, sensible series of chapters written by a universal Grandmother to her beloved grandchildren. It is more than that, though. Although the tenor of this book is telling people how to teach their children those things they need to know, she brings most of her lessons out of her public life. Taking responsibility, working with others, being useful to the community, and respecting and expressing one's own individuality, all these are things needed outside the home, and in many respects, she was ahead of her time. (there is a delightful description of how she makes conversation at dinner with someone who is totally monosyllabic, and she acknowledges that even that may fail, in which case there is nothing more that you can do!)The style could be seen as somewhat dated - women's magazines have featured many such advice articles over the years, but the depth and the wisdom contained in these pages makes it a book worth having, and the voice of the writer is totally authentic. She wrote as she spoke. Perhaps we wouldn't do things in quite this way these days, but her principles and the attitudes expressed are timeless.

Grab a cup of tea and enjoy
This book is written by my hero! I absolutely love the wisdom that is throughout this book This is a very elegant read that you want to curl up with your cup of tea on a rainy day. It isn’t thrilling, or a book that you can’t put down, but rather one that you choose to savor, a little each day.

Wonderful, practical advice from a wise lady
Eleanor Roosevelt was the first US "First Lady" who actively used her position to advocate for meaningful social change. Her impact was enormous, though often under-appreciated because she effected her changes by working through powerful men who got most of the credit.Nobody remembers what the wives of Washington, Lincoln, Wilson or any other First Lady did before Eleanor, because they largely "stayed in their places" and viewed their role as mostly ornamental. But Eleanor changed the rules, and we are all better for it. What were the secrets of her many successes? This book tells us.This book is brief, direct, practical short and easy to read. Well worth your time and money.

An Interesting Read!
Eleanor Roosevelt has always been one of my favorite people. She represents true strength, dignity, and honor in my mind. So I always find her writing to be engaging and informative. This book, written in her senior years, attempts to summarize what she has learned throughout her life's experiences. Much of it is classically wise, though a few reflections, such as those about women politicians are a product of the thinking of that time period. Nevertheless, the personal anecdotes and references make the book an enjoyable and interesting read.
