Playing With Fire (Skulduggery Pleasant)

Undiscovered Gem
I am a great fan of the entire Skulduggery Pleasant series. The dialogue is witty in a noirish sort of way, and well beyond what you usually encounter in books of this type aimed at this audience. The characters are better developed, the plots are more engaging, the action pieces flow well, and the overarching series story is satisfying. There is an awful lot of violence and mayhem, but is more cartoonish than disturbing. These can be hard books to find, and they never appear on anyone's recommended lists, but they deserve to be more than cult items.

My teen ASKED for this and she NEVER reads!
My 14 year old has been 'too cool' for anything other than pewdie-pie and homestuck for over a year. Her teacher had her read this for an assignment and she wouldn't put it down. She asked if she could go TO THE LIBRARY for another of the series and I nearly had a heart attack. I had to see what made this book more interesting to her over harry potter or twilight and it really is entertaining. She loved it. That says more than any review I could write. My anti-book, too-cool-for-school teenage daughter now wants every book in the series. THANK YOU for pulling her away from YOUTUBE. HIGHLY recommend. There's just something to these. I had to read a chapter in, in order to be pulled in, but it was worth it. I can't wait to read the whole series now!!

Playing with Fire was not quite as funny as the first book
Playing with Fire was not quite as funny as the first book. If I had to sum it up in one sentence it would be, Extended fight scenes! We meet several new enemies in this installment who have a new diabolical plan to bring back the Faceless Ones. Fast paced, and action packed! I hope there is another book soon!Giant spiders = yuck

Practically perfect in every way.
The second installment of the Skulduggery Pleasant series. I found myself laughing with the characters. It was witty, funny, and tense. With these types of books they give you 50 pages to resolve everything and you're freaking out how they could possibly do it.The humor was the same, and maybe even more funny than the last one. The plot left me stressed for the characters. If you're questioning whether to read this, then let me tell you, that it is a must to read this. I couldn't put it down. I read it all in one day, staying up into the early hours of the morning because I needed to know what happened next.Trust me when I say that you'll love this if you enjoyed the first book.

I really like these stories
I really like these stories. Definitely into the characters: they are refreshing, interesting and I want to know more about their history. My only issue is I wish I could make them last longer. These are great for a younger audience who is into the darker side. I can't wait til the main character grows up, I would love to see her as an adult.

Another fireball to the old noggin! Yes!
It's not Tolstoy, I will agree. Yet, it's fun, and frankly, I feel the world might be a better place with a Valkyrie Cain and Skulduggery Pleasant in it. I gave this book to my grandson; he loved it. He laughed and thought the adventure was marvelous.

great book .
I think his audience would have been better served with less swearing. engaging characters, easy to follow plot, the fact that the protagonist's family was not in immediate danger placed another star on the rating. the suspense and possibility of danger was there without actually causing fear or anxiety for the mom and dad.

A Wild Ride
This book was so enjoyable. I had no idea what to expect going into it - it's a book about a 12 year old girl who's uncle has just died and who gets pulled into a world of magic and mayhem by his uncle's friend/associate Skulduggery, who happens to be an undead skeleton and detective of the paranormal. It is a very fast paced, imaginative story with great, original characters, lots of action and most importantly plenty of wit. I kept chuckling along - the humour is spot on and there are so many great oneliners to savour. The action is also so jam-packed that you won't have a moment of boredom. It's definitely a great read for all ages and surprisingly dark and touching at times for a book about a magical skeleton detective. If you're looking for a fun, original, magical adventure with plenty of laughs, I wholeheartedly recommend picking this up. Personally, I will 100% be continuing this series.
