FANTASTIC first set for a 5 year old!
I got this set for my daughter's 5th birthday - I was AMAZED that she was able to put it together with minimal help from mom & dad. We've bought her some larger sets, and she's struggled with them. This is the PERFECT first LSW set for a 5 or 6 year old - would take about 20 min for them to put together.

Boys love Legos and Star Wars
We bought several Star Wars Lego sets for our boys for Christmas. This is one my daughter chose to give her brother. I think all Legos are a bit pricey, especially those with themes like Star Wars (now you're paying for two name brands, not just one), but this was a decent price and affordable enough that a child can pay for it with their allowance.
