THOROUGH reliable information
Really helpful book. Although I didn't personally need all of the genes and breeding info, its reassuring to see that this author has that level of understanding. Due to his academic background in biology, he has that thorough approach to understanding and relating the information. He is a member and advisor of an international forum on Bettas and shows them too. As a keeper and breeder he has that practical side covered as well. This guy knows his stuff!I'm a complete newcomer to the world of fish keeping and am really glad I've got a book I feel I can rely on to help me along. This book is very thorough and so is suitable for the established Betta keeper and beginner alike. For beginners, just skip the bits on genes etc, which may not be relevant now. You might want to come back to them in the future as you grow into the subject. There is more than plenty there which is useful to know from the start.

Excellent info for all standards of Betta fishkeepers, even ones like me who have one at a time.
I have had a Betta tank at home for over 15 years ago and love the little fellas, however, when my last one died after a couple of months I was at a loss to why as they normally have lived for 4-5 years. Just as I was looking for something to look up Betta problems, this book came to my attention, and I have found it excellent. The main text is for breeding and identification so not a great deal of use to me, although now I have read it I may give breeding a go, but the details on fish health, feeding and general Betta info were excellent. If you want to keep a Betta and give it a long life, then this is an excellent accompaniament to your tank.

A Must Read For Betta Keepers
A superb book, that's in-depth but reader friendly. It goes above and beyond the usual type of fish books and I would say a must for any Betta keeper.

Excellent read, but not without reservation.
This is a fascinating and detailed book that covers all the basics of betta keeping and loads more besides. The focus of the book is the breeding of bettas, but even though I'm not a breeder I found the details of betta genetics, colouring, and fin types extremely comprehensive and of great interest. I recalled all of my past and present bettas as I was reading, fitting them into their relevant categories and learning more about them than I'd ever realised. The science is thorough, the photos are stunning (my only regret was buying this on Kindle and having to view the pictures in black and white), and the author's passion for his subject comes through in every chapter. I was a little unsure why he continually promoted the use of aged water as opposed to using a much simpler and more effective dechlorinator, but the rest of his fishkeeping advice is great, and if I ever decide to breed bettas, this will be my handbook. My only reservation, and the reason I've knocked off a star, stems from the fact that Mr Brammah refers repeatedly to the practice of betta fighting without ever condemning it. He calls it 'controversial', he mentions that it's illegal in the UK, and he certainly doesn't encourage the practice outright, but his overall feeling seems to be admiration for those who breed and fight bettas in Asia. I have no doubt that we owe a great deal of betta species knowledge and breeding practice to the people who first captured and bred them, and I'm sure there is a wealth of useful experience and wisdom among the Asian fighting breeders today. None of that, however, makes it acceptable to force two animals to fight one another for 'sport' and profit. Dog fighting, cock fighting, bear baiting... these are all practices that we have outlawed in Western society, and fish fighting is no less stressful and damaging to the animals involved. Anyone who has kept bettas knows they are highly intelligent, inquisitive fish with huge personalities. The idea of forcing them to fight does not sit well with any betta keepers I know, and I was disappointed that Mr Brammah failed to express any personal discomfort at the practice. That said, I would still recommend this book to anyone with an interest in bettas, their care, and their history... and if you've ever considered breeding them, look no further.

This is what the hobby of breeding Bettas has been missing! This book is absolutely fantastic! It contains everything you could possibly want to know about keeping and breeding betas. I have been breeding Fighters for over a decade and have researched them extensively, but I have never found the info you get in this book. It contains detailed info about the genetics including colour variants and the various layers, tail types, giants, dumbos, etc, and what happens if you introduce these alleles to your lines. I cannot rate this highly enough! An absolutely must have for any breeder!

A better book on keeping and breeding bettas you will not ...
A better book on keeping and breeding bettas you will not find. From basic housing to detailed information on maintainingand breeding in detail, such a book explaining this subject was sorely lacking. Many betta keepers would learn how to get their fish to thrive, and provide a better life for their fish, if only they would read such an interesting and explanational manual.

Great book
This was a present for my partner after leaving 'subtle' hints around the house that he wanted someone to buy it for him and I'm glad I did as he really enjoys it. I have no idea with anything that is written in the book but he is very happy.
