The SmallRig universal phone cage is fantastic! It feels solid and well-built, providing excellent protection and stability for my smartphone during filming. Just bought with Xmas gift card and couldn't be happier! Right out the box I can see this is well engineered for mobile media filmmaking where high quality hand-held support is needed. The instructions for attaching the handles to the body frame could be clearer. You completely unscrew both bolts from the handle, align the handle to threads on the frame where you want them, slide the plate inside the handle and over the holes, then thread the bolts from the other side. Use the larger Allen wrench to lock them down. This can be challenging but with a bit of patience it will lockdown nicely. Initially there's some wiggle room, so I used the larger wrench to tighten the handles by threading it through the holes in the circular finger screws. (Be careful not to over-tighten as you're likely to strip the threads.) The larger Allen wrenches are held in place by a magnet at the bottom of each handle which is a nice piece of engineering). I haven't found where the smaller Allen wrench is stored which will be a problem since it's size means it'll get lost. (I'd take off a quarter star for that until I find it!) The cold shoe mounts are solid and hold a variety of accessories and there are plenty of threaded mounts for other options. Finally, you turn the screw atop the camera holder to adjust for any size cellphone and push the phone back into the holder so it is firmly mounted.

I bought the SmallRig Universal Phone Cage to use with my iPhone 16 Pro housed in an Otterbox Defender case and I have to say it does a great job of holding it in place. The included phone mount holds my phone snuggly and it does not move at all. There's plenty of space to the left and right of it so unlike other Phone Cages I have owned, my hands or fingers are not accidentally in the video or photo. It's nice to see a company who realizes people keep their expensive smartphone in a sturdy phone cover to protect it. The cage is made of aluminum alloy and it will easily hold your smart phone and if you are like me and use external lighting kits it will hold three on the top of the cage and three on the bottom of the cage if you buy camera hot shoe adapters to slide into the hot shoes on the top or bottom of the Phone Cage. In the middle of the cages there's 3 holes which you could easily screw in a male threaded double head screw adapter into the middle hole which you could screw a third external lighting source into the cage. The only downside of this purchase as the included instructional manual to put together the SmallRig Universal Phone Cage. The manual doesn't tell you how to install the two handles that are included. The handles have two small bolts that you have to unscrew with the included Allen Wrench which the manual doesn't tell you is at the bottom on each handle housed in a magnetic unit. You take out the allen wrench then unscrew the bolts and metal washer then slide them into the handle and tighten them into the included screw bolt which screws into the side of the phone cage. Then you take the allen wrech put it into one of the small holes on the screw bolt [they don't tell you what its called] and tighten the screw bolt until its tight. Then return the Allen wrench into the bottom of the handle in its magnetic holding unit. On the top of each handle are three holes which you could add another lighting source or a small external microphone. When I used my iPhone 16 Pro at .5 I did not get any vignetting from the SmallRig Universal Phone Cage nor did I get any of my fingers or part of my hands in the photos or videos. The SmallRig Universal Phone Cage is well made and quite sturdy. Out of the four phone cages I own this one is by far the best one I have purchased. If you have any trouble putting it together send me a message and I'll explain it in better detail for you. You probably could if you wanted to screw it into your tripod. Although honestly I don't know why you would not want to hand hold this. It's light weight enough to do so even if you're like me and have multiple external lighting sources screwed into it. If you own a Gopro or similar device you should be able to use the included allen wrench to disassemble the phone mount then use one of the screw holes in the bottom with an adapter to screw in your gopro or similar device. Summary: Perhaps the best compact Universal Phone Cage on the market. If SmallRig took the time to make a better instructional manual with REAL photographs this would be a slam dunk five star purchase but because they didn't it drops to a four star purchase that is still well worth the investment.

SO IM A NEW VIDEOGRAPHER AND BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE WHY HOLD A PHONE IN MY HANDS? IM A GIRLIE GIRL AND SOMETIMES MY NAILS MIGHT BRUSH BY THE CAMERA. THIS MADE IT SO EASY TO USE AND I FEEL LIKE IM A PROFESSIONAL. WORKS AMAZING WITH MY IPHONE 17 PRO MAX. AND THE STABALIZATION IS GREATTT!

This cage has plenty of room for the needed attachments, and most importantly, has a good grip on the phone. The adjustable clamp allows for a good grip on any phone. You have the option of reattaching the handles for vertical or horizontal filming, and of course you can place it on a tripod. Won’t have much range of motion on the tripod though.
