Why Red and Blue, is there an advantage using either?

Not really. Sometimes when your etching measurements on a piece of material you signify your layout with the two different colors. In other words, your drilling holes on one piece at one size and you etch that in blue and the other piece your holes are larger and you use red. Just not to get mixed up . At least that’s what I do. Many uses for two colors. Sometimes for stainless. Sometimes for plain steel.

What is the solvent/thinner in the dye ? Thanks

The solvent/thinner in Dykem Layout Fluid Blue is typically a volatile organic compound (VOC) such as xylene or toluene.

Does this penetrate sanding scratches? Say if I sanded a surface to 220, then went to 400, would it show any remaining 220 marks?

Yes, it would show any marks not abraded by the current grit sandpaper/grinder
