It holds about 2 cups and it big enough to crush medicine, salt and paper, make garlic and ginger pastes and curry pastes for a table-sized meal. FINALLY!!!! As with ANY mortar and pestle made of anything other than wood, before use, you MUST properly season it, or it won't work, and you'll grind pieces of rock into your food. Yuck. After you purchase it, put a quick google search of "how to season a mortar and pestle", and you'll see you have to put in a little elbow grease. We spent 24 seasoning ours, and we are SOOOOOOO happy with it. I've already used it for grinding peppercorns, garlic into paste, and some chili peppers into powder. AWESOME!!!! I used water to grind and it never stops creating a grey slurry.** A: I’m not sure it will ever stop creating granite dust. It's stone so definitely no soap - that will affect the flavour of the spices you grind in it.
