QUITE NICE
Not a bad doc - but in no way outstanding. It seems to be a rather indulgent trip down memory lane for the "old timers", many of whom appear in this film. It's all very pleasant stuff, but there is nothing in the way of aerial photography to send a tingle down your spine. A lot of reminiscences and a few shots of some really gorgeous vintage planes help to breathe life into what would otherwise be a fairly dry subject, being the history of what is today called Van Nuys Airport. The print quality is excellent, but even that doesn't come anywhere near justifying the exorbitant price of the disc.

The story of Southern California's 'Van Nuys' Airport
From a field to the present time. Lots of aviation stories told by fun pilots who in 1924 would not have believed that they would fly 300 people between continents at 6 miles high and without propellers. Superb photography but on the USA format. Now the busiest airfield in the USA.

The Romance of Flying
Since first reading about this film I have been looking out for it coming to the UK. It did not but I kept on hearing great things about it.I had a good look on amazon.com (USA) and it did claim to be multi region, so I took a deep breath and ordered it there. I forgot that it would be NTSC rather than PAL/SECAM though, but fortunately my DVD player could cope. It is not a multi region DVD player but the region thing was indeed not an issue.I have written the odd review previously but I have never been desperate to before, and I am desperate to recommend this.It is a documentary, a number of interviews linked with lovely flying sequences. The airport is the star of the show and the affection for it from the people who have been part of its history is the theme. Van Nuys is the Los Angeles general aviation airport and is busier than Heathrow.I have some of Barry Schiffs books, it was good to hear him interviewed, there were ATC guys, aircraft owners, AOPA and anyone with a link to, and love of, the airport. The history of it reflects the development of all aviation during the last century and it was claimed to be a model for the future development of all GA fields. It does seem to be (since they have built around it) remarkably close to residential areas. The flying sequences are terrific, it is subtitled 'The Romance of Flying' and it is indeed just that.I paid $14.99 plus $6.49 p&p. My credit card was charged £14.49. As long as the declared total is no more than £20 it is exempt from VAT and import duty. Delivery took 11 days.If you have any interest in aviation at all you will not regret buying it.
