The most amazing MySQL book ever made!
I wanted to have the honor of being the first person to review this amazing book. I hadn't purchased the previous edition but I saw that it received tons of good reviews on Amazon and this one came out like a day or two before I decided to buy it so I knew that the content would be up to date, which is always important when it comes to programming and web technology books; the landscape is constantly changing.I purchased the ebook version for $50.57 and I can say it was worth every sent and more! I purchased this title because I needed to learn more about MySQL so that I can build a web application that relies heavily on querying MySQL databases through PHP. I'm already several chapters in and I've learned far more in just a couple of days of reading and trying the examples in this book than I have from months of reading several other books and watching online tutorial videos which only skim the surface of what MySQL can do.This book teaches in a fun way with numerous helpful examples. I never thought that a MySQL book could be a page turner but it is; it's thrilling to read and I will treasure this book for many years to come, as I'm sure I'll need to go back to it whenever I'm stuck on a database issue. Please do yourself a favor and buy this book!!!

... agree with Darkside that this book has some really cool stuff in here
I have to agree with Darkside that this book has some really cool stuff in here. And plan on covering every page of it. And will update this soon.F.Y.I. If you get a book with the Purple cover (not Red) on it, it is the 2014 book. And not the cheaper 30.00+ book. Yes, I freaked a little ....Ok alot. and made sure that it was the new and updated edition, and it is. And of course it arrived on-time and perfect condition, as promisedIf anything Amazon change the color of the book's picture to reflect the Purple cover. I said some pretty nasty things about you guys ......I am sorry ...hope that you can forgive me ? :)

I really like it. This book can help beginners to experts ...
Have not had time to read the whole book, but from everything I have read, I really like it. This book can help beginners to experts alike. Examples from Perl, PHP and Ruby, which if you like learning different languages, this part is great. Has lots of example queries and seems to keep security in mind. For example, there is a whole section on retrieving data and securely displaying it the user. Over 800+ pages will keep you busy for a while, and covers most everything MySQL. Good job Paul DuBois.

Good Reference Book for MySQL
Handy reference for MySQL statements and a basic solutions. Kind of a quick at-a-glance book to give you examples on how to approach common problems. Useful for beginners and intermediates.

Wish I read this a long time ago
The cookbook has a lot of examples that stretch across the normal use of MySQL and is written in a structured manner. It may take a while to increase in complexity, but builds a good base.

Disappointed. Not really a MySQL Cookbook in my view.
Disappointed. I don't rate this as a "MySQL Cookbook". I think it's more at SQL beginner level than cookbook level, but there are other better books and web articles for (My)SQL beginners.Where am I coming from? I'm new to MySQL/MariaDB but have 20+ years with Oracle SQL*Plus and PL/SQL, 40+ years in IT with a lot of database design, data and systems analysis, reporting, IT architecture and some development work.I don't rate this book well because:- You'll get a lot more MySQL info from (Oracle's) MySQL Reference Manual. I was looking for something that adds to/expands on the Ref Manual, but with respect to MySQL this book largely, in my opinion, rehashes bits from the Ref. Manual.- It's not what I'd call an IT Cookbook! Most of the examples are pretty trivial and not that helpful. It's all low level stuff. There's little I'd use in serious SQL development work.- 50% or so of the book is about PHP, Perl, Ruby, Java rather than MySQL.- It's too verbose where tighter, cleaner explanations would be clearer.- It does n't tackle critical (My)SQL areas well (or some at all), like exception handling and debugging, real SQL querying, code structuring and efficiency.- Multi-table (i.e. 3+ table) joins are barely mentioned, yet are critical to realistic queries and SQL performance.- Time period handling, which is a Cookbook level topic, isn't mentioned. (Time and date datatype handling are.)- It's expensive, both in £ and pages, for what it provides.

You want to display specific columns and rows from a table", Solution: "Name columns in the output columns list, use a WHERE clause that specifies conditions".
