The "New Breed" of Brazilian music
Bought this book and Maria Martinez's Afro-Cuban Coordination. I can say that both are very much like Gary Chester's The New Breed. This book in particular has the grooves printed on one page to be memorized and on a separate page common rhythmic figures to improvise with a LH cross stick or snare sound. The figures progress from easy quarter notes to string s of eighths to eight notes and rest and eventually longer phrases. The purpose of this book is to have you improvising with nuance of the style. However this book does not go in deep of the history of the music and any educator can tell you that historical knowledge informs your playing. However this book still deserves 5 stars for what it is, a guide for independence with exposure to typical Brazilian rhythmic figures.

I like maria Martunezs' books,i have all of them.the brazilian one howeveris the one i thought was a little lacking,in that,it was written where youhave to work from snare parts only and the other drums, such as ,bass drumhi-hat and so forth are on another page.I know this saves time for anyone writing a book and it does make sense, however I was hoping for some brazilian rhythmns that ms Martinez was inspired by.nonetheless it is worth having,as Maria Martinez is a very, very qualified teacher.
