well-designed detectors, well worth upgrading
I haven’t had these for long, but I’m impressed so far. I replaced five of my smoke and smoke/CO detectors because my 6-year-old Firex units kept chirping for no reason, even with fresh batteries. I decided to stop messing with them and swap them all out for these. Installation was straightforward—I rewired them with the new harness since the plug was different and got them all mounted. When I turned the power on, they all started beeping. Walking around, I noticed the power light was off on all but one unit. Only one had the green light on. I powered down, checked the wiring, and found the white wire had slipped out of the screw cap on the working unit. After fixing it and powering back up, everything worked perfectly. I like that it alerted me to a wiring issue. The wire must have popped out when I pushed the cap back into the box. All good and secure now. My favorite feature is the 10-year built-in battery, especially since I travel often and lose AC power regularly. Not having to change batteries is a huge plus. These are solid units—well-designed, easy to install, and smart enough to detect when something’s wrong. Five stars. UPDATE 11/25: After a year of use with NO false alarms and no chirping at 2:00am, going away for months at a time, these have worked out great for me. Worth the upgrade!

Reliable safety equipment
Excellent brand smoke detector. Used it to replace one in a bedroom that had reached its ten year operating period and was not responding to the reset function. This was a hard wired detector but the installation was simple given the instructions and tools provided. It too should give us ten years of safety and service.

0 out of 10 - DO NOT RECOMMEND
DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! I purchased this smoke detector because I have Kidde smoke detectors throughout my house and have since 2013. This appears to be the newest model and is not compatible with the older model of Kidde smoke detectors I purchased last year. Here are the issues that I had installing this smoke detector: 1. This smoke detector does not fit into the base of the older model Kidde smoke detectors. I had to change out the base in the ceiling. Normally not a big deal except the new base does not have a hole for the hardwires to fit through. I had to drill a hole into the new base to hardwire the smoke detector. 2. When attaching the new base to the ceiling, the screw holes are off from the standard junction box size and did not fit properly, had to make a new hole for those as well. Also, you cannot install this base unless you take the screws completely out of the junction box. There is no larger hole that the head of the screw can pass through with a slot to turn and lock the base in place. The old base had that, the new base for this model has a hole on one side that fits the screw and a small slot on the other side that still only fits just the screw. 3. The plug style for the hardwire is not the same either. This will require you to rewire the new hardwire plug rather than using the old Kidde plug from the previous Kidde smoke detector. 4. Once the base is modified and installed into the ceiling and the new hardwire plug is wired, the smoke detector will not fit onto the base if the hardwire plug is actually plugged into the smoke detector!!!! There is a release tab on the new plug that prevents the smoke detector from being installed onto the new base that came with the unit. I had to cut the tab off the plug that came with the unit to allow the smoke detector to be installed onto the base that came with the unit. Summary: Nothing in this smoke detector is compatible with any previous Kidde smoke detectors. In fact, NOTHING that came with this smoke detector (the base or the hardwiring plug) is compatible with anything else that also came with this smoke detector!! The base and wiring plug took a lot of modification to actually install this unit. I will NOT be purchasing a Kidde smoke detector ever again!

Works with humidifiers
I've used this for the past week in my bedroom with a cool mist humidifier. So far, no false alarms at 2 am! My previous Kidde model, just 3 years old, was a combination ion/photo sensor and did not play well with any humidifier. It loved going off during the wee hours, creating mass panic and chaos in my poor dogs. We have managed to sleep peacefully since installing this model. Will update if it starts acting naughty. My husband installed with no issue, but you should note that it is directly wired to the house to connect with our other units. The harness at the actual detector is a different style from previous models.

These detectors are interrelated: when one goes off, the others follow suit.
All our smoke detectors are hardwired, something we didn't know when we bought our house. When we decided to replace all alarms, that's how we discovered that they're hard-wired. We decided to buy these detectors which came six in a package. We like that they have different color lights to indicate when they're working fine and when they're not. Even though they are hard-wired, they have batteries for back-up. One night, one detector started beeping. And to our surprise, all the others started beeping too. That's when we found out that they were designed to work together as a series. So when one detector goes off, so will the others. That ensures that no matter what part of the house people are, ALL the alarms will go off if one is triggered. In our case, we didn't have smoke/fire, but rather, one of the detectors went bad (it's less than 2 years old!). When it started beeping, the rest of the detectors followed suit. The beeping was so loud and shrill that we were afraid they would wake up the entire neighborhood. So that's a sure indication that the alarms are so loud they can't be ignored. By process of elimination, we identified which detector was bad (the light was red, while the others were green). Because these detectors are interrelated, we had to get the same detector as a replacement. We do like these detectos because they have visual indicator lights and they're priced well. Why four stars? Well, we bought all of them at the same time, so we're not too thrilled that one would go bad after less than two years.
