It's the only game in town.
This is a small book, so while the pictures are great and plentiful, they are tiny. It's reasonable given the price of the book is 17 dollars. This book is the only book on Bencharong in English that is still in print, so I'm a captive audience. The only other book I can find is also authored by Dawn Rooney, so I'm assuming they are pretty similar books. The text meanders and varies in quality. Some is germane to Bencharong (motifs, styles, colors). Some is guesswork (the long description of the one current wood-fired kiln in China because Bencharong might have been made similarly). Some text just doesn't fit (the whole whirlwind tour through the history of the Chakri dynasty. The author could have linked the kings to various fashions in Bencharong or patronage of Bencharong, but she doesn't. So you get a short history of recent Thai kings.)If you are interested in Bencharong, this book is the only game in town. If you just want to browse for inspiration, this book might not be for you.
