Review: Improvement in the mids and highs from my Class A amp powered by an SMPS. - I have been experimenting with a 1969 JLH Class A audio amp (provided with fake 2N3055s unfortunately) that requires 24v, 5amp DC supply. I initially powered up the amp with a linear bench supply that pushed only 15v and it sounded fine but at 15v scope showed clipping at about 5 watts, although again, the amp sounded fine at low level. Since I had a meanwell 24v, 5a SMPS handy, I tried that. Hmm, not so good. Mids and highs sounded somewhat "compressed" and "scratchy". SMPS supplies are infamous for outputting high frequency noise. Switch back to linear supply, mids and highs good again! So I tried the 20amp version of this unit even though my amp draws < 2 amps. YES, noticeable improvement in the mids and highs. Now I can use the SMPS instead of hot, heavy, and ineffcient linear supply. I do not have a 5000 mhz, 24" touch screen, 12 channel megabucks scope so I cannot confirm with instrument measurements that the high frequency SMPS noise is reduced. But I listen to a LOT of hifi, and I trust my ears. Does that $25 amp now sound as good as my $2K Musical Fidelity Class A? No. But for $25 I will replace the fakes with authentic 2N3055s and see how that sounds. Another $50 just for the authentic power transistors though...
