Fun, informative and delicious

A wonderful cookbook that does a fantastic job of representing the sheer variety of this special part of East London. Many of the recipes are linked to the restaurants and stalls of Brick Lane, and going through this book is both an exciting inspiration for mealtimes and an informative glimpse into the establishments that define the area. The author has done a brilliant job of pulling together the many different kinds of cuisines and cultures that so deliciously define such a historical place. The recipes are easy to follow, with an emphasis on ingredients and taste rather than excessive technicality- which can be intimidating.Being a vegan at home I find many of the recipes easy to adapt to my own requirements- one of the many benefits of cooking with a global emphasis. Although I have to admit the 'chilli cheese samosas' are making me rethink my lifestyle. Regardless, the recipes are helpfully indexed for dietary needs.Tomorrow I will make the vegan yoghurt cake for my mum, and when I get back to London I will be buying myself some potol (a type of gourd) which I remember seeing in shops but never thought to try. Can't wait to get the book messier and sticky with spice-stained fingerprints.

An amazing gift for any Londoner!

I had the pleasure of meeting Dina during an event where she gave a demo on how to cook different recipes using leftovers. From the moment she started the demo, I knew that her book would be an amazing cookbook. What I didn’t expect was that it is also a journey through the history of Brick Lane and its ever changing demographics. Having been living in the East End for five yearrs, the surroundings of Brick Lane have always caught my attention for their diversity, their colours, their smells and their people: Banglatown, Whitechapel, Aldgate, Spitalfields and Shoreditch. In her book, she has finally uncovered for me the secrets of this part of London through stories told via recipes passed on by her ancestors, others borrowed from the neighbours of Brick Lane and even some of her own. Cooking is sharing is caring... and you’ll care for this book as much as Dina cares for Brick Lane.

Such a magical cookbook!

I bought this cookbook for my Mum for Mothers' Day this year on behalf of my half-Bangladeshi twin daughters. So much thought has gone into this beautifully presented collection of recipes - we are loving learning all about the magical stories behind them, and excited to start trying them out. It's so inspiring to learn about Dina's important work preserving the cultural heritage not just of her own community, but the broader rich history of Brick Lane.Highly recommended - this cookbook is a real treat!

A fabulous collection of diverse recipes

I love this cookbook. I work near Brick Lane and I love the history and bohemian feel of the area. This is really reflected in the book, with recipes from salt beef to Bengali lamb curry. It’s a great read too, with a narrative thread on the East End running through it. Highly recommended.

Pages full of flavour.

This is a beautiful book with lots of vibrant recipes. Only tried a handful of recipes so far but have loads earmarked. Especially love the diet specific index at the back of the book .....it doesn’t half save me some time especially when looking for veggie or gluten free inspiration in a rush. The dishes I’ve tried so far have been packed with flavour and I can’t wait to try more. This is a must for anyone who loves a good recipe book.
